Friday Estimates: Last Key Starts First with $12.74 million

Insidious: The Last Key

There will be a fifth installment in the Insidious franchise. That much is practically guaranteed after Friday’s debut. Insidious: The Last Key opened in first place with $12.74 million during its opening day. On the downside, its critical / popular reception has been mixed. Its reviews are only 25% positive and that won’t help it draw in new viewers. The film did earn a B minus from CinemaScore, which is better than a lot of horror films manage, so that could help. It will very likely slip to second place on Saturday, but the film will still top our prediction with between $25 million and $30 million.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was close behind with $10.8 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $35 million over the weekend. The film continues to outpace expectations and at this point, hitting $300 million domestically is getting more and more realistic.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a distant third with $6.58 million on Friday. However, this was more or less what we expected, so it should still earn about $25 million over the weekend for a total of $575 million after four weekends in release.

Molly’s Game was a little better than expected with $2.28 million in 1,608 theaters on Friday. Good reviews should get it past $6 million over the weekend, but that’s probably not enough for significant further expansion. Perhaps if it can earn some major Awards Season wins this will change.
