Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle remained in first place with $32.6 million on 33,000 screens in 83 markets for totals of $450.8 million internationally and $767.3 million worldwide. Had the film earned half of that, it still would have been a financial success worthy of a sequel. China was the film’s biggest market, both of the weekend and overall, as it earned $7.71 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $66.50 million. The film will have no trouble getting to $800 million worldwide, probably by the end of this coming weekend, while $900 million isn’t completely out of the question.

Secret Superstar was in second place earning $27.36 million in China (including previews) for an international total of $38.05 million. This is the latest Indian film to find an audience in China. If this can become the norm, it will be a huge boon for the Indian movie industry.

Forever Young rose to second place in China and remained in third place internationally with $23.61 million over the weekend for two week total of $68.40 million.

Insidious: The Last Key entered the top five for the first time in its run with $18.4 million in 52 markets for totals of $68.1 million internationally and $126.8 million worldwide. Even if the film doesn’t make another penny, it has already made enough to justify another installment in the franchise. I will admit, I didn’t think that would happen. The film’s biggest market of the weekend was Russia, where it opened in second place with $2.96 million on 1,004 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.46 million, including previews.

Coco rounded out the top five with $18.3 million in 40 markets for totals of $455.2 million internationally and $655.9 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $7.22 million in 575 theaters.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi fell out of the top five, but it is the biggest hit of 2017, so we will track it as it reaches its final milestones. This weekend it added $9.9 million in 49 markets for totals of $692.0 million internationally and $1.296 billion worldwide. The film extended its lead on top of the 2017 chart, while it climbed into ninth place on the all-time chart. It has a chance of overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II for eighth place, but that is asking a lot.
