Home Market Releases for February 6th, 2018

February 7, 2018

Duckman: The Complete Series

There are not a lot of big titles on this week’s list of home market releases and there won’t be for at least a couple more weeks. That’s not to say there is nothing worth picking up. Both Blame (DVD) and Only the Brave (Blu-ray) are Pick of the Week contenders. In the end, Duckman: The Compete Series is the Pick of the Week winner and worth picking up, unless you own the previous DVD releases.

All of my Heart: Inn Love - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The latest Hallmark Channel original movie. Like nearly all of these movies, this one has no reviews, but it is selling well on the home market. On a side note, this movie is almost twice as expensive on VOD as it is on DVD.

A Bad Moms Christmas - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I liked the first film, but comedy sequels have a notoriously bad track record. Is this film one of the exceptions? Read our review for my opinion.

Also coming out this week is a franchise double-shot, but it is only on DVD.

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A Batman animated film set in the Victorian era with Batman going up against Jack the Ripper. DC’s animation department used to be amazing, but they’ve struggled recently, so it is nice to see this film’s reviews are so good. Granted, there are only five reviews, so that could change rapidly. Extras include audio commentary track, making of featurette, preview for the next film, and bonus episode of Batman: The Animated Series. It is definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of DC animated movies, but not quite a Pick of the Week contender.

Blame - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Quinn Shephard is just 22 years old. She was barely old enough to drink when she wrote, directed, produced, starred in, and edited this movie. The film earned 80% positive reviews, but was a VOD release, so it went nowhere at the box office. Sadly, it is only getting a DVD release this week and not a Blu-ray release, but it is still worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

The Cloverfield Paradox - Reviews - Video on Demand
This film debuted on Netflix on Sunday with no advanced warning. A lot of people are talking about this is as a new paradigm in movie distribution. Netflix is so powerful that they can get a major studio to release a franchise movie without spending months hyping it and still be profitable. That’s not what happened, nor is this a new thing. In reality, the movie didn’t start out as a Cloverfield film. It is based on an unrelated script that was later retrofitted into the Cloverfield universe and when the end result was bad, it was dumped on the home market. This happens all of the time and has ever since the home market took off, but when it used to happen, the film would fade into obscurity. However, Netflix doesn’t release viewership data, at least not numbers that can be independently verified, so instead of selling a few thousand Blu-rays and fading into obscurity, they can hype initial viewership and make it look like it was a huge hit, even if most people don’t even finish watching the movie.

Duckman: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: DVD
An adult cartoon from the min-1990s starring Jason Alexander as the voice of the titular Duckman, a hard-living private detective. I gave the original releases the Pick of the Week honors when they came out. This box set is just those releases in one package, but at a much cheaper price. Is it worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Friday the 13th: Ultimate Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
An 8-movie Blu-ray box set for just $28. If you like the franchise and don’t have the movies on Blu-ray just yet, then this is perfect. Apparently that describes a lot of people, because it is selling surprisingly well.

Keijo!!!!!!!! - The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
A sports Anime show about a girl who joins a Keijo team. Keijo is a made up sport, where four women stand on a floating platform and try to knock their competitors off using only their boobs or butts. ... You can watch the first two episodes on Funimation and there’s a “Mature Content” warning. I don’t think “mature” is the right word. The reviews are quite good, while the extras are better than most Anime releases have. It is still an Ecchi show, so that will limit its target audience. There is both a regular edition and a limited edition, the latter of which includes an art book.

LBJ - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Busted Oscar-bait. It’s a by-the-numbers biopic with a good central performance, but nothing else to really recommend it.

Only the Brave - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This also feels like busted Oscar-bait, only much closer to being actually award-worthy. Its Tomatometer Score is 88% positive, but the average score given by a critic was just 7.1 out of 10. Extras include an audio commentary track, a trio of featurettes, deleted scenes, and a music video. It is certainly worth picking up and even a Pick of the Week contender.

Reset - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A Chinese / South Korean co-production that was a reasonable hit in China, but it couldn’t find an audience here. Is it an undiscovered gem? Or was it rightfully ignored? Perhaps somewhere in-between? Read our review to find out.

The Sandlot - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Every time I look at this movie’s Tomatometer score, I’m shocked at how low it is. The film is now widely considered a classic, but critics were divided on the film when it first came out. On the other hand, it has too many home market releases to be considered a Pick of the Week contender.

Studio Ghibli: Double-Shot
Pom Poko - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Tales from Earthsea - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
I think we’ve hit the end of the Studio Ghibli releases. Pom Poko is not a bad movie, but if you are unfamiliar with the tanuki myths, some of the stranger aspects are very off-putting. On the other hand, most people agree that Tales from Earthsea is arguably the worst movie the studio has ever released.

Suburbicon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film could have been really good, given its pedigree. However, most critics agree it is a mess. Extras include an audio commentary track and a trio of featurettes. That’s not enough to overcome its reviews, not even close.

An Uncommon Grace - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The second Hallmark Channel original movie of the week. It’s just like the first one; there are no reviews, but it is selling very well.

Victor Crowley - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The fourth film in the Hatchet franchise. There are only a handful of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but most of them are positive. Extras include two audio commentary tracks and a making of featurette. If you like these movies, it is certainly worth picking up.

Yuri!!! on ICE: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is one of the best and most popular sports Anime TV shows of the past few years. Extras include an audio commentary track, cast interviews, and more. If you are new to Anime, this is a good show to start with.

Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno is arguably the best secondary Blu-ray release of the week, but it is not the only one worth picking up.
