Home Market Releases for February 27th, 2018

Thor: Ragnarok

It is a great week on the home market with several Oscar contenders making their home market debuts. I put in review requests for several of them, but so far none have arrived. Coco is still a contender for Pick of the Week, but I’ve heard some backlash against the other two, so I want to wait to see for myself. In the end, I went with Thor: Ragnarok and Pick of the Week, even though the DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack don’t come out till next week. The screener arrived early and it is certainly the best Blu-ray on this week’s list.

78/52: Hitchcocks Shower Scene - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A documentary about the famous shower scene in Psycho. The reviews are great and if you are interested in the craft of making films, then it is worth checking out. There are not a lot of extras, but this is common for documentaries. I would still rate it as a solid rental, leaning towards a purchase.

Attack on Titan: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This show is still getting great reviews, but I’ve also heard a bit of a backlash against it. The twists have become too preposterous, while the allegories are too heavy-handed. That said, there are few Anime titles that can beat it at action scenes. Extras include audio commentary tracks on two episodes, a trio of interviews, making of featurette, and more.

Basket Case: Limited Release - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This film is a “classic”, if you are a fan of ultra-low budget horror films. Admittedly, that does limit the target audience. Those who are fans will certainly want to buy this Blu-ray, as it is based on a new 4K master from the original prints and it is loaded with extras.

Coco - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Theatrical Verision) or Video on Demand (Plus Bonus Content)
One of Pixar’s best films and a very likely Oscar winner this coming weekend. It is clearly a Pick of the Week contender, but I’m holding off giving it that title until after the screener arrives.

Darkest Hour - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of three Oscar contenders hitting DVD / Blu-ray this week. I’m still waiting for the screeners for all three films, but of the three, this is the one I’m least interested in seeing. It’s too Oscar-bait, and not in an interesting way. Extras include an audio commentary and two making of featurettes. It is at least worth checking out and very likely worth picking up.

Just Getting Started - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I forgot this movie existed. Looking at its box office numbers, I’m not the only one. Looking at its reviews, one has to assume everyone involved would like to forget about it.

Lady and the Tramp - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Video on Demand (with Bonus Content)
The only film that is coming out this week that I put in a request for and got the screener on time. In fact, it arrived early and I did the review last week.

Let There Be Light - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A faith-based film that earned better reviews than most in its genre manage. Granted, they are barely 50% positive, so the crossover appeal really isn’t there. That said, if you are in the target demographic, this is one of your better options.

MacGyver: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I was interested in seeing this TV show, as I really liked the original. Then I saw the reviews. The main character is too smug and not engaging enough to be worth my time.

Murder on the Orient Express - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The screener did arrive. However, it arrived on Monday at about noon. While that’s technically not late, there was no way to get a review done in time.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The last film on this week’s list where I’m still waiting for a screener. I really hope it arrives soon, as it could be the big winner on Oscar night and I really want to get the review done before then.

Thor: Ragnarok - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (Plus Bonus Content)
For the second week in a row, we have an early review. The film is already out on VOD, so is it worth grabbing there? Or should you wait for the Blu-ray? Read our review for my opinion.

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This Anime series ran for nearly 200 episodes during the early to mid 1980s and is still loved today. This movie has a nearly identical score on My Anime List and if you are interested in the show, this is a cheaper way to get into it. Hopefully it sells well enough that the TV show gets a new release, because the current options are out of print and hundreds of dollars.

Cinderella Boy: Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
From the makers of Lupin the Third, but it is not as good as that Anime. Then again, few shows are.

There are three Oscar contenders coming out on VOD this week: Call Me by Your Name, Ferdinand, and The Shape of Water. Two of the three are certainly worth checking out. In fact, The Shape of Water could be the big winner on Oscar night.
