International Box Office: Ready Starts Out Number One Internationally with $127.5 million

April 4, 2018

Ready Player One

Ready Player One opened in first place on the international chart with $127.5 million on 35,600 screens in 62 markets. Its biggest single market was China with $61.61 million on 18,200 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $62.06 million. This is Warner Bros.’ biggest opening ever in this market. The film’s second biggest international market of the weekend was South Korea, where it earned second place with $6.35 million on 1,079 screens for a total opening of $8.08 million. The film also had to settle for second place behind Peter Rabbit in the U.K. with $7.3 million on 1,251 screens. The film did open in first place in several other major markets, including France ($6.15 million on 719 screens) and Russia ($5.74 million on 1,461).

Peter Rabbit rose to second place with $31.29 million on 13,376 screens in 75 markets for totals of $119.73 million internationally and $230.50 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but Easter helped it grow 21% in the U.K. earning $7.87 million in 673 theaters for a total of $30.35 million in that market. That’s equivalent to $150 to $175 million here, given the size of the two markets.

Pacific Rim: Uprising fell to third place with $31.44 million in 63 markets for totals of $186.65 million internationally and $232.48 million worldwide. The film fell 86% during its second weekend of release in China earning $9.24 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $90.13 million. This film is doing no better than its predecessor did and that’s bad news for a film that cost $155 million to make.

Baaghi 2 opened in fourth place with $15.21 million in 9 markets. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of this came from its first place, $13.9 million debut in its native India.

Tomb Raider rounded out the top five with $12.1 million on 10,168 screens in 66 markets for totals of $194.6 million internationally and $245.1 million worldwide. The film had no new markets this week and with almost no new markets left to open in the future, the film will likely run out of steam before it hits $300 million worldwide.

Black Panther has fallen out of the top five, but it is the biggest hit of the year so far, so we will continue to track it. This past weekend, the film earned $7.7 million in 49 markets for totals of $623.2 million internationally and $1.274 billion worldwide. The film is now in 40th place on the All-Time International chart and 10th place worldwide.
