Friday Estimates: Troopers has Super Opening, I Feel has a Pretty Good One

April 21, 2018

Super Troopers

Super Troopers 2 opened in first place on Friday with $7.9 million, which is more than I predicted it would make over the entire weekend. On the other hand, this film’s reviews are wea. It managed a B plus from CinemaScore, which isn’t terrible, but it’s not particularly good either. Its legs likely won’t be great, as the target demographic is much more likely to rush out to the movie opening night, leaving the film with just over $17 million during its opening weekend. This could be more than its combined budget, especially if you disregard the money it earned from Kickstarter. (The film doesn’t have to earn a profit on those numbers.)

A Quiet Place earned second place with $6.4 million, but it won’t stay there for long. Its reviews are much better and it is a holdover, so it will bounce back on Saturday and take first place over the weekend with over $21 million.

I Feel Pretty only managed third place on Friday with $6.25 million; however, because of its target demographc, it will have a better internal multiplier than Super Troopers 2. Granted, its reviews won’t help, while it also earned just a B plus from CinemaScore, but it will likely come very close to second place with just under $17 million.

Rampage fell 57% from its opening Friday to $5 million, which is a little lower than I was expecting. It won’t bounce back as much as other sophomore films, mainly because its opening weekend had such an amazing internal multiplier that it would be hard to bounce back significantly compared to as well as it did last weekend. It should still manage $16 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $61 million. It still has a shot at $100 million domestically, but it will only get there, if Infinity War doesn’t crush it next weekend. That’s a big if.

Truth or Dare collapsed, falling 70% from its opening Friday to just $2.5 million. This is a sharp decline, but not sharper than expected. After all, it is a horror film that earned awful reviews and films like this usually collapse the second weekend. We predicted just under $7 million and actually just over $7 million is more likely that this point.

Traffik earned $1.4 million during its opening day, putting it in 8th place. The film’s reviews are the weakest of the three wide releases, while it is too small to get a CinemaScore. It still won’t be a major hit, earning nearly $4 million during its opening weekend. It could have been worse. It could have been much worse.
