International Box Office: Rampage Retains Lead on International Chart

April 25, 2018

Rampage

Rampage remained in first place on the international chart with $58.0 million on 33,140 screens in 61 markets, for totals of $217.6 million internationally and $283.3 million worldwide. The studio’s share of this is very likely above the film’s $120 million production budget, so it has an excellent shot at breaking even early in its home market run. The film’s biggest market of the weekend was China, where it earned $27.07 million on 16,900 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $106.57 million. The film has yet to open in France, Germany, and Japan and by the time it’s done, it will be very close to breaking even.

Ready Player One remained in second place with $23.0 million on 14,750 screens in 67 markets for totals of $395.8 million internationally and $521.9 million worldwide. The film did well in Japan, earning second place with $4.4 million on 745 screens. On the downside, the film is rumored to have cost $300 million to make and advertise, so the studio is going to have to wait a while to break even on this film. It should get there, assuming its home market numbers live up to its theatrical numbers.

A Quiet Place was next with $15.0 million in 57 markets for totals of $74.8 million internationally and $206.1 million worldwide. The film’s biggest debut came in Spain, but it only managed second place there with $891,000. Horror films tend to do better in that market. That said, had the film made $75 million worldwide, the studio would have been quite happy with that result, so anything it makes from now on is pure gravy.

21 Karat opened in second place in China and fourth place over all with $9.97 million over the weekend for a total opening of $9.99 million.

Peter Rabbit rounded out the top five with $6.75 million on 6,682 screens in 81 markets for totals of $196.36 million internationally and $310.63 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it earned $1.43 million on 313 screens in Australia for a total of $17.19 million after a month of release.

Black Panther earned $1.2 million for totals of $642.9 million internationally and $1.324 billion worldwide. The film has overtaken The Last Jedi for ninth place on the overall chart.
