Theater Averages: Documentaries Remain in Fashion

August 2, 2018

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood

Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood dominated the theater average chart earning first place with $28,144 in one theater. The next closest film was a fellow documentary, McQueen, which earned an average of $16,692 in five theaters during its second weekend of release. The overall number one film, Mission: Impossible—Fallout, was next with an average of $13,962. The final film in the $10,000 club was Puzzle, with an average of $12,243 in five theaters.

The rest of the new limited releases had a wide range of results. The Captain was the best of the rest with $7,568 in one theater. Meanwhile, 93Queen earned $6,302 in one theater over the weekend and $16,065 from Wednesday through Sunday. Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings was the widest limited release of the week playing in 31 theaters, while it earned an average of $4,094. Good Manners struggled with just $2,476 in its lone theater. Finally, Winning Formula missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $901 in five theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Blindspotting reached $1 million over the weekend and was nearly at $2 million by the end of the weekend.
  • Eighth Grade topped $2 million early in the weekend and was very nearly at $3 million by the end of the weekend. Additionally, its theater average is over $8,000, so it will have no trouble expanding.
  • Leave No Trace hit $4 million before the weekend and is already more than halfway to $5 million.
  • As expected, Three Identical Strangers made it all the way to $6 million over the weekend. It has peaked at the box office and it will start losing theaters soon. That said, it still has a reasonable shot at $10 million theatrically, which is amazing for a documentary.
  • Won’t You Be My Neighbor got all the way to $20 million, which is outstanding for a documentary. $25 million is an extremely long-shot, but not completely impossible.
