Weekend Estimates: Fallout Doesn’t Fall Very Far

August 5, 2018

Mission: Impossible—Fallout

Mission: Impossible—Fallout fell just 43% during its second weekend earning $35.0 million for a two-week total of $124.5 million. It will have no trouble getting to $200 million domestically, especially with the weak competition for the rest of the month.

On the other hand, Christopher Robin only managed $25.00 million over the weekend, which isn’t really an opening weekend you would expect for a summer release, so one could argue summer is officially over. The film’s reviews and its A from CinemaScore should help its legs, as will the lack of direct competition, but this won’t be another $100 million hit for Disney. It will be their first film released in 2018 to not get to that milestone. Its biggest market internationally was Mexico, where it opened with $1.4 million, while it debuted in second place in Russia with $1.2 million.

The Spy Who Dumped Me debuted in third place with $12.35 million. That’s not a disaster, but it is also not to be considered even a midlevel hit. Its reviews fell below the 40% positive level and it only manged a B from CinemaScore. On the positive side, it likely didn’t cost a lot to make, so Lionsgate could still earn a small profit from this movie, eventually.

The Darkest Minds only managed eighth place with $5.8 million, opening below the Mendoza Line. Its reviews and its B from CinemaScore won’t help its legs; however, word-of-mouth won’t matter, as theater owners will be looking to drop this movie as soon as they are contractually able to.

Death of a Nation missed the top ten with just $2.33 million in just over 1,000 theaters. The film has yet to earn a single positive review and with an opening like this, theater owners will drop it very quickly.

Arguably, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days had a better opening. It earned $439,000 in 48 theaters for an average of $9,146. Meanwhile, The Miseducation of Cameron Post opened with $53,000 in just two theaters.

One last note: Black Panther hit $700 million over the weekend. It became just the third film to reach that milestone.
