Theater Averages: Beautiful Start

October 17, 2018

Beautiful Boy

Beautiful Boy had the best theater average of the weekend and the fourth best average for a limited release this year at $54,722 in four theaters. However, its reviews are well below what limited releases normally need to thrive, so I’m worried about its legs going forward. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Charm City, which opened with $10,511 in its lone theater.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were even close to the $10,000 club; however, there were a few in the $5,000 range. This includes Jane and Emma, which opened with an average of $5,810 in 21 theaters. Liyana and The Happy Prince were neck-and-neck with $5,160 and $5,033 respectively. The Oath was well back with an average of just $2,908 in 10 theaters. In Echo Park barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,111 in two theaters.

There were three films that were not as lucky. Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer was a crowd-funded, faith-based film and it missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,741. Stella’s Last Weekend was even worse with an average of $1,188 in two theaters. Bigger had the smallest average at just $516 in 61 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Sisters Brothers hit $1 million over the weekend, and while it has a real shot at $2 million, it is not guaranteed to get there.
  • Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer earned more than $1 million during its opening weekend. However, with its average below $2,000, it likely won’t get much further than $2 million.
  • On the other hand, The Old Man and the Gun got to $1 million early in the weekend and will hit $2 million before this coming weekend.
  • Free Solo reached $1 million early last week and $2 million over the weekend. It should have no trouble getting to $3 million.
  • Colette also topped $2 million over the weekend and it too will have no trouble getting to $3 million before the coming weekend.
  • The Hate U Give reached both $1 million and $2 million over the weekend and will continue to expand this coming weekend.
  • Searching made it all the way to $25 million, last weekend. It slipped under my radar at the time.
