Theater Averages: Boy Erased Writes its Way to the Top

November 7, 2018

Boy Erased

Boy Erased led the way on the theater average chart earning an average of $41,411 in five theaters. This was nearly three times the second place film, A Private War, which earned an average of $15,123 in four theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Bohemian Rhapsody, with an average of $12,765.

There were almost no other new limited releases to talk about. The best of the rest was Searching For Ingmar Bergman with $6,500 in its lone theater. The only other film to talk about was Bodied, which earned an average of $3,786 in 14 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Suspiria expanding into over 300 theaters, but managed less than $1 million over the weekend. It was still able to hit the $1 million milestone overall, but don’t expect it to expand significantly beyond this point.
  • Can You Ever Forgive Me? also cracked $1 million over the weekend; however, its theater average is high enough to warrant further expansion, so it will have an easier time hitting more milestones.
  • The Sisters Brothers made it to $3 million over the weekend, but this it as far as it will go. This is great compared to most limited releases, but terrible for a film that cost $38 million to make.
  • Beautiful Boy also topped $3 million over the weekend, but unlike the previous film, this one has a shot at further expansion and will have no trouble reaching more milestones.
  • Mid90s made it to $4 million before the weekend and $5 million over the weekend. It isn’t done just yet, but each additional milestone will be harder to get to.
  • Free Solo climbed to $6 million over the weekend and it isn’t done yet.
  • The Old Man and the Gun hit $7.5 million before the weekend and it is already at nearly $10 million.
  • The Hate U Give became just the fourth limited release of the year to get to $20 million and it isn’t done yet.
