Friday Estimates: Ralph Slips Below Moana’s Pace, Still a Monster Hit

November 24, 2018

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Ralph Breaks the Internet again led the way on Friday with $21.74 million for a three-day total $50.54 million. Good news: It is still on pace to top our prediction; in fact, depending on when you read this on Saturday, it might have already done so. At this point, a five-day opening of $85 million seems like a safe bet. Bad news: it has fallen behind Moana’s daily pace, despite a much faster start, so it will definitely have weaker legs. It should still have no problem getting to $200 million domestically and still is in a race with Dr Seuss’ The Grinch for biggest hit of November. It’s just no longer a record-setting opening.

Creed II remained in second place with $14.13 million on Friday and $34.64 million so far. It is well ahead of Creed’s pace and is on pace for $61 million over the weekend, which would be the record for a live-action Thanksgiving opening.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was relatively close behind with $11.82 million on Friday, lifting its running tally to $99.29 million after 8 days of release. It hit $100 million early on Saturday, its ninth day of release, but one has to assume Warner Bros. was hoping it would get to that milestone at least a couple of days earlier.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch was right behind with $11.6 million on Friday for a running tally of $161.83 million. It is on pace to match our $40 million five-day prediction nearly perfectly.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Instant Family have have on a little better than we anticipated. Bohemian Rhapsody earned another $5.22 putting it on pace for just under $19 million. Meanwhile, Instant Family added $4.64 million on Friday and is on pace for close to $17 million over five days.

Robin Hood earned seventh place on Friday with $3.46 million for a three-day total of $8.57 million. It is on pace for $14 million over five days, which is just a little more than our prediction, but way too low for a film that cost $90 million to $100 million to make.

On the limited release front, The Favorite opened with $190,000 in 4 theaters for an average of $47,643. This would be the in the top ten for theater average of the year, and this is just its Friday night average. It will top Suspiria’s yearly best theater average and will become the first film released in 2018 to top $100,000 on the theater average chart.
