Weekend Estimates: Aquaman Completes Threepeat, Escape Room Thrives

Aquaman is holding on even better than expected with an estimated $30.7 million over the weekend for a total of $259.7 million after three weeks of release. The film will have no trouble topping $300 million domestically, and it might be able to climb a spot or two on the DCEU chart before it is done. Internationally, the film is doing even better with an estimated $56.2 million on 18,900 screens in 79 markets for an international total of $681 million. It is the biggest international hit for a D.C. film, topping The Dark Knight. It has $940.7 million worldwide and will crack $1 billion shortly.
Escape Room opened in second place with $18.0 million, which is double its $9 million production budget, which means Sony’s share of the box office is already more than it cost to make. Granted, it likely cost close to double that to advertise, but this is still a fantastic start. Furthermore, while its reviews are merely mixed, it earned a B from CinemaScore, which is excellent for a horror film. Add in the upcoming MLK day long weekend, and the movie could earn enough domestically to cover its entire combined budget. Even if it doesn’t, it will come close enough to break even before its home market run.
Mary Poppins Returns slipped to third place with an estimated $15.77 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $138.73 million. Internationally, it managed $23.0 million for an international total of $119.2 million and a worldwide total of $257.9 million. This is already almost enough to cover its entire $130 million production budget. Additionally, with Disney setting up a streaming service this year, they have another source of revenue that could help films break even.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is estimated to earn $13.01 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $133.86 million and it will have no trouble getting to $150 million domestically. Likewise, it is earning $11.7 million internationally this weekend for a total of $141.5 million so far. With opening in Brazil and Japan still ahead, the film could crack $350 million worldwide, which would be enough to break even during its initial push onto the home market. Additionally, if it does well during Awards Season, then its home market numbers will be even better.
Bumblebee is estimated to earn $12.78 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $97.13 million. This is just shy of its $102 million production budget and it will top that figure before the coming weekend. The film opened in first place in China, earning $59.20 million over three days. I think any fears that this film wouldn’t get a sequel are now over. Prime will be made.
