2018 - Awards Season: BAFTA - Nominations

January 12, 2019

The Favorite

The BAFTA nominations were announced and The Favorite led the way with 12 nominations. Sometimes the BAFTAs are a really good indicator for who will do well on Oscar night. Other times their bias to British films is too much. I think this year will be an example of the latter and I don't think The Favourite is suddenly an Oscar favorite. That said, there’s still some things you can learn here.

Notes and Reactions...

  • The Favourite has done well during Awards Season so far, but not this well. Its 12 nominations were nearly double the second-place films.
  • Speaking of the second-place films, there was a four-way tie for second place with Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma, and A Star is Born all earning seven nominations.
  • Normally when a foreign-language film does as well as Roma did, it would be practically guaranteed to win Best Foreign-language Film award. However, Cold War picked up four nominations, so it is in the hunt. Granted, Roma is the favorite, but I suspect by only a 2-1 advantage.
  • There were a lot of familiar names and movies on this list. In most prestige categories, all or nearly all of the nominees previously earned guild nominations, so there are not a lot of surprises to talk about.
  • Black Panther only got one nomination, for Best Visual Effects, which is the biggest snub of the night.
