Friday Estimates: Medea Takes on Dragons and Wins

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral got off to a faster than expected start on Friday earning $9.2 million. This might be enough to keep it in first place over the full weekend. It depends on its legs. Its reviews are only 29% positive, which normally would be a disaster, but the Madea franchise has been critic-proof for its entire history, so this really shouldn’t have an effect and opening with $26 million or more is likely.
On the other hand, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World stumbled falling 63% from its opening Friday to just $6.46 million. Universal is projecting a weekend haul of $25.65 million after this result, which would leave it in second place. That said, it would still leave it on pace to top its $129 million production budget domestically. Add in its international numbers and it will break even during its initial push onto the home market.
Alita: Battle Angel is matching expectations nearly perfectly with $1.7 million on Friday putting it on pace for close to $7 million over the weekend. The film is doing well enough to save face and could encourage other studios to adapt Anime titles, but doing so with a more reasonable budget.
Greta opened with $1.60 million on Friday, which was enough for fourth place, for now. Its reviews have again slipped under the overall positive level, this time it will likely stay there. This won’t help its legs leaving the film with an opening weekend of between $4 million and $5 million. There’s a glut of films, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Green Book, Isn’t It Romantic, and Fighting With My Family, that could overtake it by the end of the weekend.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will almost certainly overtake Greta after earning $1.28 million on Friday. Since it is a family film, it will bounce back much more on Saturday putting it on pace for $6 million over the weekend.
