Home Market Releases for April 9th, 2019

April 11, 2019

Mirai

We’ve hit the summer doldrums on the home market, as there are no major winter releases that haven’t come out and none of 2019’s early releases were amazing, so there’s going to be a large gap between monster hits. One of the biggest hits is On the Basis of Sex, which is also one of the best. Another contender for Pick of the Week is Mirai while last week’s Archer: The Complete Season Nine: Danger Island would have been a contender last week, if the screener had arrived on time. In the end, it wasn’t a particularly close race and the Oscar-nominated movie won.

Archer: The Complete Season Nine: Danger Island - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The screener arrived late, but I got the review done over the weekend. Was is worth the wait? Or has the TV show jumped the shark? Read our review to find out.

Black Clover: Season One, Part Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
A typical Shounen Anime with too many clichés and a way too uninteresting lead character.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Set 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The follow-up to Naruto, one of the longest-running Anime of all time. This one’s reviews have not been as strong, so I don’t know how long it will last.

A Dog’s Way Home - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
If you like dogs. ... It’s not a bad movie, but it is also not a great film either. It has a weird mix of plot points and tones and that makes it harder to find an audience.

Holmes & Watson - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
Video on Demand (4K Ultra HD)
One of the worst movies of 2018. One of the worst movies of the past decade when you compare the talent involved and the final result.

Is It Wrong To Expect A Hot Spring In A Dungeon? - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is the OVA for Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? It’s heavy on the fanservice, the giggly kind, and light on the plot. It’s a typical OVA for this type of Anime.

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A martial arts vampire film. It’s not good, but it is entertainingly silly.

Mirai - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This Anime movie hit theaters late last year and did very well nearly reaching $1 million. That’s very strong for an animated film in limited release. It’s about a young boy who is jealous of the attention his baby sister is getting. Then he gets a visit from that same sister when she time travels from the future. The pair then travel further in the past to meet their ancestors. There are a ton of extras, much more than you would expect from a foreign-language import, and it is a clear contender for Pick of the Week.

Mrs. Wilson - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Ruth Wilson stars as a woman whose husband recently passed away. She then learns he might have had another wife and trying to find the truth brings a lot of truths to light. The reviews are excellent, but it is only coming out on DVD.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes: SteelBook - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I bought this film when it came out on Blu-ray last month. It’s a great movie and worth owning, but I wouldn’t spend extra for a SteelBook. Then again, I’m not a fan of SteelBooks, as they take up too much space.

On the Basis of Sex - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I really wanted to get a review done over the weekend, but I hurt myself on Saturday and it got so bad I wound up in the hospital on Tuesday. I’m going to be fine, but my ego will remain bruised for a while. I’ll still try and get the review done this weekend, but in the meantime, I’ll give my initial reactions...

While the movie was treated like Oscar-bait by the studio getting a limited release on the final weekend of the year. It is more of a wide appeal crowd-pleasure buoyed by a very engaging central performance by Felicity Jones. I’m a little disappointed in the extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, but that’s the only thing stopping this from being a Pick of the Week contender.

Welcome to Marwen - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is arguably the worst Oscar-bait released last year. It’s a real mess, especially since it is based on a true story and it has a creepy, almost harem Anime feel to it.

Talk to Me - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
We Die Young - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I’m not overly impressed with this week’s selection of secondary Blu-ray titles. Stranger Than Paradise, Talk to Me, and some others are worth checking out, but there are not many that I would call a hidden gem.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Man on a Ledge - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There’s only one 4K release this week. It isn’t a first-run release and it wasn’t even a hit when it first came out.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
No megasets this week.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
There are also no secondary VOD titles. That’s extremely rare.
