Klute

It’s the middle of summer, at least according to the movie industry, which explains why there are so few prime releases this weekend. In fact, after Shazam!, there’s almost nothing here that can be considered a real box office hit. As for the competition for Pick of the Week, well, that list is just as short with only one contender from this week, Klute: Criterion Collection. Although both late reviews, Bachman (DVD or Blu-ray) and Furie (DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack), are worth picking up as well.

Bachman

Bachman - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A rockumentury about Randy Bachman, who founded both The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Is the film worth watching for fans of the musician? Does it have wider appeal? Read our review to find out.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Set 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Not as good as the original generation.

Breakthrough - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The reviews are not as bad as most faith-based films earn, but it still has limited crossover appeal. The extras are good with an audio commentary track, featurettes, deleted scenes, and more. If you are part of the target audience, then it is worth picking up.

Criminal Minds: The Fourteenth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I grew tired of this show. It became too predictable, which is a death sentence for a police procedural show.

From the Earth to the Moon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A 20-year old HBO mini-series coming out to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing. It would be filler on most weeks, but there’s so little competition this week that the sales numbers look better by comparison.

Furie

Furie - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A Vietnamese action film about a single mother, Hai, whose daughter, Mai, is kidnapped by human traffickers. The film earned amazing reviews and broke the box office record for a Vietnamese film. Did it deserve this success? Or am I in the minority here? Check out our review for my opinion.

Hallmark Chanel Original Movie Double-Shot
The Crossword Mysteries: A Puzzle to Die For - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To the Altar - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
They are Hallmark Channel original movies. These films never have any reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but this release is part of a series, so it clearly has a lot of fans who will want to pick up the DVD.

Klute

Klute: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A neo-Noir crime thriller about a missing company executive who may or may not be connected with a series of prostitute suicides. The reviews are over 90% positive and this is a Criterion Collection release, so you know the DVD / Blu-ray is great with a good mix of old and new extras. It is worth picking up and even a contender for Pick of the Week.

Little Woods - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is one of the more disappointing box office results of the year. This film opened in limited release with a Tomatometer Score that was in the high 90s range, but still opened below the Mendoza Line. This explains why it isn’t even getting a Blu-ray release and why the DVD has no special features. It is still worth picking up, because the movie is good, but it is not a contender for Pick of the Week.

Shazam! - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film is widely considered one of the best wide releases of the year and the best installment in the DCEU. I’m in the minority here, but I think Wonder Woman is better. I still think this movie is great, but I found the kids a little too annoying a little too often to be the best film in the franchise. Also, the extras are a little on the light side. That said, it is still absolutely worth picking up.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best 200 Episodes Ever! - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I can’t believe this show has lasted 200 episodes. It is very rare for a show to last 200 episodes, so I can see why they would want to celebrate. Normally I tell people to not buy box sets like this and to wait for the complete collection, but I have no idea when that will happen with this show.

Star Trek: Kelvin Timeline - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack or 4K Combo Pack
The three films in the Kelvin Timeline hit 4K this week in a box set. I only really liked Beyond, so this isn’t worth a purchase for me.

Titans: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This show is better than the trailer made it look, but even a lot of the positive reviews are not that enthusiastic about the show’s overall quality.

Witchblade: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are some absolute classics on this week’s list of secondary Blu-ray releases. And I’m not just talking about films with stellar reviews, but films that also came out many decades ago.

3D Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Shazam! - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
There’s a 3D release on this week’s list. That’s incredibly rare. It is also the biggest release of the week.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Moon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
I don’t know if this film needs to be seen in 4K, but more people need to see it.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Space: 1999 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A Sci-fi series from the 1970s. It’s cheesy, but in a good way.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
The Curse of La Llorona - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Intruder - Reviews - Video on Demand
Long Shot - Reviews - Video on Demand
Long Shot - Reviews - Video on Demand (4K Ultra HD)
Miss Arizona - Reviews - Video on Demand
UglyDolls - Reviews - Video on Demand
UglyDolls - Reviews - Video on Demand (4K Ultra HD)
Long Shot is the only secondary VOD title I’m interested in, which is good news, because the Blu-ray screener has already arrived. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, because I have one more late screener to get to.
