VOD Releases: There’s a Large Gap Between Quality and Quantity

There are a ton of new releases on VOD this week. Unfortunately, most are rather weak and almost none are going to find a significant audience. The War of the Worlds is the best release, but the Criterion Collection Blu-ray is the better deal. On the other hand, Sometimes Always Never is perfect for VOD, but you have to wait until Friday to get it.

We have two Bill Nighy films on this week’s list. The second one is the better of the two.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Season Twenty-One
Amazon or iTunes
This is the second-longest-running narrative TV show on Prime Time American TV. The longest running show is The Simpsons. In fact, seven of the ten longest-running shows are currently on the air, if you include Supernatural (also ending after the upcoming season), which is tied for tenth place.

Sometimes Always Never
iTunes or Vudu
This is not the same movie as Never Rarely Sometimes Always, although I refuse to believe I’m the only one confused by the names. This film stars Bill Nighy, among others, and its reviews are overwhelmingly positive, if not really enthusiastically positive. That said, this is perfectly acceptable for a VOD release.

The War of the Worlds - iTunes
This is an absolute classic, but I would stick with the Criterion Collection Blu-ray release.

Will and Grace: The Revival: Season Three
Amazon
I’ve heard conflicting opinions on whether or not the revival lives up to the show’s original run. At worst, the reboot is relatively close in terms of quality, so if you enjoyed the original, you should at least check out this one.
