Theater counts: The 355 not enough to unseat Spider-Man

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Last week was all about Spider-Man: No Way Home as we experienced a week where no new wide releases opened. While this week won’t be a drastic change in that regard, we do see one film open wide with the release of the all-female espionage thriller, The 355. The film follows a globe-trotting quartet of women, each with a particular set of unique skills, who must forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed. The 355 opens in 3,145 theaters.

Unsurprisingly, this week’s widest release remains the phenom that is Spider Man: No Way Home. The film, which has posted well over $600 million in domestic earnings, drops from 4,206 theaters last week to 4,012 theaters this week; which still places it securely at the top of our list as it heads into its fourth weekend at the box office. Rounding out our top five this week is Sing 2 at 3,713 locations, The King’s Man in 3,040 locations, and The Matrix Resurrections showing in 2,875 theaters.

While new wide releases might be a rarity at the moment, there are plenty of limited releases to choose from this week. Another thriller hitting theaters is IFC FilmsSee For Me. The home-invasion survival film starring Skyler Davenport will arrive in 34 locations. Also opening this week is the documentary, Sparks: The Ken Sparks Story. The film, which documents the life of the all time winningest coach in the NCAA Div II, releases in 14 Regal Cinemas from January 7-13th. Lastly, the South Korean drama, Embrace Again is set to open in 18 locations across North America.

Looking ahead to next week we see the fifth installment of the popular 90s franchise horror Scream. Although titled like a reboot, Scream is a direct sequel to 2010’s Scream 4. The latest film brings back Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette as they fight to stay alive amidst a new ghost-faced masked killer who stalks the quiet town of Woodsboro. Scream is set to launch in an estimated 3,500 theaters.
