Theater counts: Morbius now widest release despite solid showings from newcomers Sonic and Ambulance

Morbius

Despite debuting last week, the arrival of Morbius could not oust The Lost City from its place as widest release. This week is a different story however as last week’s box office chart topper becomes the new widest release while fending off the two newcomers, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Ambulance.

After collecting just over $39 million in its North American opening weekend, Morbius enters its second week by retaining its debut count of 4,268 locations. Meanwhile Sonic is back and is determined to prove that he has the temperament of a hero as he is put to the test when Dr. Robotnik reappears, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, looking for an emerald that would have the power to destroy entire civilizations. Ben Schwartz returns as the titular character and Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik as the film launches in 4,234 locations. The original Sonic debuted to just over $58 million in its opening weekend back in February, 2020, and went on to score just shy of $305 million worldwide, albeit during the opening phase of the pandemic. Also opening wide this week is the action-thriller Ambulance, starring Eiza González, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The bank heist movie, which is set over one day across the streets of Los Angeles, lands in 3,412 locations. Rounding out the top five this week is last week’s widest release in The Lost City, dropping below 4,000 theaters and landing in the third spot with 3,797 cinemas. Lastly, making the cut once again is The Batman, sliding in with 3,254 locations.

Showing in limited release this week is the latest from IFC Films in Cow. An intimate portrait of one dairy cow’s life, the documentary highlights the beauty and challenges cows face, and their great service to us all. Cow will be available in 35 theaters.

Looking ahead to next week we see two wide releases appear in theaters. Father Stu arrives early with a Wednesday opening. The biographical drama which stars Mark Wahlberg (who also produces) as a boxer turned Priest who suffers from inclusion body myositis debuts in an estimated 2,500 theaters according to Sony Pictures. Following Father Stu in a traditional Friday opening is the third installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series and the 11th overall in the Wizarding World franchise. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is set to release in an estimated 4,100 theaters.

Note: Theater counts for Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie are estimates from Box Office Pro.
