Theater counts: Fast X races into 4,046 theaters, but Guardians still widest in the galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Entering its third week at the box office, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will three-peat as the widest release by retaining its count of 4,450 theaters from its first two weeks. The film currently enjoys a global box office total of $545 million, with $231 million of that coming from North American cinemas. Unlike last week and next week, we see only one wide release hitting theaters, but it’s a big one: Fast X.

The eleventh installment of the popular Fast and Furious franchise, Fast X follows F9: The Fast Saga, which earned over $719 million worldwide back in June of 2021. The franchise as a whole has fired up a worldwide total of $6.7 billion, averaging $661 million per film. Like its predecessors, the action film features a large ensemble cast, led by Vin Diesel as the street racing icon Dominic Toretto, while Fast & Furious newcomer Jason Momoa is on board to play the film’s villain, Dante Reyes. The sequel begins its theatrical run in 4,046 locations which includes traditional as well as IMAX screens.

Rounding out the top five this week is the third widest release in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Showing in 3,529 venues this week, the animated-adventure film has generated a hefty $539 million from domestic box office, while taking in over $689 million from overseas markets, through its first six weeks on the big screen. Making its sophomore effort in 3,513 cinemas this week, and just behind Super Mario is the buddy-comedy sequel, Book Club: The Next Chapter. The movie scored $6.7 million in its opening weekend and currently has a six-day domestic total of $9.5 million. Lastly, Evil Dead Rise comes in this week with 2,173 locations.

As previously touched upon, there will be plenty of variety in wide releases hitting movie theaters next week. The largest of these big screen features will be The Little Mermaid. Walt Disney projects that the live-action adaptation of the 1989 film will open in 4,200 movie houses. Other films making big screen debuts next week is the comedy About My Father in an estimated 2,300 theaters, and Gerard Butler action-thriller Kandahar, as well as the action-comedy feature The Machine starring comedian Bert Kreischer as a fictionalized version of himself, estimated to launch in 2,300 theaters.
