Theater counts: Argylle repeats but faces fierce competition from newcomers

Argylle

Despite debuting lower than many expected, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle easily topped the domestic box office charts in its opening frame, earning just over $17 million in its first three days, and taking in more than $11 million more than its closest competitor. This week looks to be a much closer contest with the release of 1980’s set horror-comedy, Lisa Frankenstein.

Lisa Frankenstein follows Lisa Swallows, a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way. Starting its theatrical run in 3,143 movie houses, the feature, which is set in 1989, stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse and is directed by Zelda Williams.

Also opening in wide release this week is the long-awaited theatrical debut of Turning Red, a film which was canceled in March of 2022 in favor of a Disney+ exclusive release. The movie, like its studio sibling Soul from a few weeks ago, will see what it can earn from showings starting out in 1,560 venues. Disney will follow up with the release of Luca on March 22nd.

Making its way into theaters this week is the British horror film, Out of Darkness. Opening in 897 North American cinemas the movie is set 45,000 years ago and follows a stone-age community as it attempts to defend itself against a mysterious enemy.

Rounding out the top five this week is The Beekeeper, still playing in a solid 3,057 locations. Occupying the spot as the fourth widest release this week is Anyone But You, making itself available in 2,805 cinemas. Lastly, Wonka holds on with 2,764 locations.

Opening on Valentine’s Day we see the debut of two highly anticipated movies with the release of the Bob Marley biopic, Bob Marley: One Love as well as Dakota Johnson’s super-hero feature, Madame Web. Beginning their runs in approximately 3,500 and 4,000 locations respectively, both films are sure to bring some much needed excitement to North American cinemas.
