Theater counts: Madame Web weaves its way to widest release

Madame Web

After spending its first two weeks as the widest release and at the box office itself, Argylle slips to second this week, despite an increase in showings as it heads into its third week. The spy-action comedy has racked up just over $31 million in 13-days at the domestic box office, while bringing in roughly the same ($32 million) from overseas play. This week, the espionage feature will take a back seat to Valentine’s Day newcomers Madame Web, and the aptly-named considering the holiday, Bob Marley: One Love.

Debuting on Wednesday, Madame Web scored $6.05 million in its opening foray, good enough for number two on the daily rankings. The superhero film is headlined by Dakota Johnson as the titular character, Madame Web, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world itself. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, it is the fourth film in Sony PicturesSpider-Man Universe. Retaining its mid-week count of 4,013 theaters and remaining widest release, the film stars a bevy of Hollywood talent including Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, and Emma Roberts.

Taking the number one position at the Valentine’s Day box office with a take of $14 million is the aforementioned Bob Marley: One Love. The film stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the legendary reggae artist, Bob Marley, and charts the singer’s life after a 1976 assassination attempt which left himself and his wife injured. The movie’s impressive opening day earnings made it the top mid-week Valentine’s Day film ever. Making its debut in 3,536 locations, it adds three cinemas going into the weekend, settling in at a solid 3,539 movie houses.

Rounding out the top five this week is Argylle, adding 40 venues for a total of 3,645 theaters, placing it as the second-widest release on our list. Making its sophomore effort this week is Lisa Frankenstein, dropping only one theater and still playing in 3,143 locations, and lastly, Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper logging in with a still respectable 2,557 movie houses.

Looking ahead to next week we see the release of three new wide releases, including Ordinary Angels starring Hilary Swank. That film is projected to begin its run in approximately 2,800 locations. Also making its theatrical debut is the road trip comedy, Drive-Away Dolls, which looks to open in about 2,000 cinemas. Lastly, the latest in the Demon Slayer franchise hits theaters as Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba To the Hashira Training makes its arrival to North American shores in approximately 1,900 movie venues. Worthy of a mention is the one-week re-release of 2020’s Tenet, playing exclusively in IMAX locations, which includes footage of the upcoming feature, Dune: Part Two
