How to Train Your Dragon

The weekend box office proved to be a much tighter race for How to Train Your Dragon in its second go-around, staving off newcomer 28 Years Later for the repeat win, this time $36.58 million to the latter’s $30 million. The current leader will have its hands full this weekend, however, as Brad Pitt’s Formula One feature races into theaters along with horror sequel M3GAN 2.0, also setting her sights on toppling the reigning champ.

Starting out in 3,661 theaters, F1: The Movie stars Pitt as a former Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s and, after a horrible crash, retired from Formula One to begin racing in other disciplines, only to return years later to mentor a new rookie prodigy. The movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who helmed another supersonic film in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, a film that went on to score a whopping $1.45 billion at the global box office. Co-starring with Pitt includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, among others.

As previously mentioned the follow-up to 2022’s M3GAN hits cinemas this weekend. Set two years after the events of M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage and was subsequently destroyed. Meanwhile, M3GAN’s creator, Gemma, realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. The latest feature in the M3GAN franchise will open in 3,112 movie houses.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned $176 million domestic earner, in How to Train Your Dragon, dropping 246 locations this weekend but still very widely available in 4,127 cinemas. Occupying the second-place spot is one of last week’s newcomers with Elio retaining its opening count of 3,750 theaters. Lastly, 28 Years Later, looking to add to its 13-day domestic total of $38.68 million, also keeping with its starting count of 3,444 venues.
