Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 5th, 2011

April 5th, 2011

It's Tron week with at least seven releases related to Tron and Tron: Legacy. This appears to have scared away the competition, because outside of those releases, there's not much of a selection. Actually, there are three $100 million hits coming out this week; however, one doesn't come out till Friday, so I'll likely deal with it next week after the screener arrives, and the other is so bad it's best to pretend it doesn't exist. Those two films are clearly the Pick of the Week, but depending on where you buy your DVDs, the Combo Pack may or may nor be less expensive than buying the two films separately, so double-check before you buy. Awards Season - Oscar Nods far from Curious

January 22nd, 2009

For a year without an obvious front-runner for the Oscar race, there were not a whole lot of surprises when it came to the nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations today and leading the way was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire was second with ten. More...

Awards Season - Hat Trick Of Guild Nominations

January 9th, 2009

The final guild nominations were recently announced, and there are several theatrical categories to get to. The three guilds, DGA, PGA, and WGA, announced out eight nominations in total, which really help to fill in the gaps for prediction the Oscar nods. Or in some cases, just make matters more confusing. DVD Sales - Mamma Hot on Sales Chart

January 1st, 2009

There were only three new releases to chart this week, sort of. Call in three and a half new releases, but we will get to that in a bit. On the top of the sales chart this week was Mamma Mia!, which sold 3.72 million units for $77.68 million in consumer retail spending. More...

Awards Season - The Curious Case of the Frost/Nixon Globe Nominations

December 12th, 2008

The latest set of Awards Season nominations were handed out today as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations. There was not much in the way of surprises, and it is hard to look at one film and say it was the big winner, but Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button come the closest. More...

DVD Sales - In the Black

December 9th, 2008

There were not many new releases to chart this week, but we did have a new number one as Hancock took top spot on the sales chart. That film sold 3.02 million units during its first week of release for a total of $61.23 million in consumer retail spending. More...

DVD Rentals - Hancock Flies to the Top

December 9th, 2008

There were not that many new releases to chart this week, but Hancock was able to open on top with about 40% more rentals than Tropic Thunder. More...

DVD Sales - WALL-E Sales Out of this World

December 1st, 2008

WALL-E was the biggest new release of the week, as it topped the sales chart with an impressive 6.20 million units sold and $112.07 million in consumer retail spending. This is the best opening week for a DVD since At World's End sold more than 8 million units during its opening week last year and it instantly puts the DVD into second place for the year. More...

DVD Rentals - Tropic Vacation

December 1st, 2008

Tropic Thunder topped the rental charts, generating about 20% more revenue than fellow new release WALL-E, which placed second. More...

DVD Sales - Panda Fights its Way to the Top

November 26th, 2008

The number of new releases reached double digits on the sales chart this week, if you include Kung Fu Panda, which got a two-day jump on sales last week. This week it took first place with 3.76 million units sold and $63.91 million in revenue for totals of 4.54 million and $77.42 million. More...

DVD Rentals - Golden Army for Rent

November 26th, 2008

While there were four new releases in the top five on the sales chart this week, it was the exact opposite on the rental charts as there was only one new release to reach top five. That new release, Hellboy II - The Golden Army, came out on top, and generated over 40% more revenue than second place Kung Fu Panda. More...

DVD Sales - People Getting Smart on Home Market

November 19th, 2008

There were four new releases to chart this week, or perhaps five. It depends on how you count Kung Fu Panda. The number one release for the week was Get Smart, which sold 862,000 units and generated $16.50 million in consumer retail spending. Second place went to Kung Fu Panda with 780,000 units / $13.51 million, although that film didn't officially come out until Sunday, meaning these sales came mostly from one day. (There were a few stores selling the DVD on Saturday.) More...

DVD Rentals - Feeling Smart

November 19th, 2008

The same two new releases that topped the sales chart this week also topped the rental chart with Get Smart generating about 40% more revenue than Kung Fu Panda. More...

DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part II

November 18th, 2008

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movie: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part one can be found here. More...

DVD Releases for November 11, 2008 - Part II

November 11th, 2008

I have just one word to describe this week's DVD Release Report, and that word is, 'Ggrrghfuul.' 'Ggrrghfuul' is the sound one makes after reviewing 19 DVDs in one week, and I wasn't even able to put a dent in my pile of late DVDs. (On a related note, I have never been late reviewing a movie, as long as it arrives before the weekend before the movie is released. Given how busy some weeks have been, that's quite a feat.) As for the actual releases, there are a number of top-notch offerings coming out on Tuesday, and one that came out on Sunday. These include Firefly - The Complete Series - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon, Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army - Buy from Amazon: 3-Disc DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray Collector's Edition, and Sunset Boulevard - Centennial Collection - Buy from Amazon. All three are worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week, and I'm not going to bother to narrow it down further. Additionally, there are two late releases featured on this week's list, Futurama - Bender's Game - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray and Kung Fu Panda - Buy from Amazon: DVD, With Secrets of the Furious Five, or Blu-ray, and both of these are also worthy of DVD Pick of the Week Honors. As expected with such a massive amount of releases, the list has been split into two and the first part can be found here. More...

DVD Releases for November 4, 2008

November 3rd, 2008

This week's list of DVD and Blu-rays feels a little shorter than usual. Either the problems I've been having with Amazon has caused me to miss a lot of releases, or this is just the calm before the storm. It won't be too long before the holiday shopping season starts, and when it does we will be flooded with DVDs and Blu-rays. As for the best of what's here, I'm going with Futurama - Bender's Game, either on DVD or Blu-ray. More...

Its best market of the weekend was Germany, where it remained in first place with $4.58 million on 754 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.61 million after two. The film is starting to shed theaters and markets at an accelerated pace, however, it still has openings in Italy and other smaller markets ahead of it, while it could reach $400 million internationally and $600 million worldwide before the end of its run. (The latter it a lot easier than the former.) More...

International Top Five - Mummy Ends Summer on Strong Note

August 6th, 2008

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor started its international run in about a third of the world scoring first place with $61.93 million on 4094 screens in 27 markets. This includes $9.24 million on 723 screens in South Korea over the weekend, and $13.11 million in total, which represents the best opening for a non-local film this year. The film was also fantastic in its opening in Russia scoring a reported $12.7 million there. Meanwhile in Spain it pulled in $6.48 million on 554 screens while in Mexico it earned $4.99 million on 430 screens, finishing first by significant margins in both markets. Next up for the film is the U.K., France, and Germany this weekend, Japan next weekend, while it doesn't end its run till September when it debuts in Italy. More...

International Details - Milestone Weekend

August 3rd, 2008

Hancock fell 56% to $20.22 million on 7516 screens in 70 markets, however, that was still enough for second place on the international chart this week, and lifted its totals to $295.58 million internationally and $502.06 million worldwide, reaching a major milestone. The film's best market of the week was Spain where it remained in first place with $3.98 million on 575 screens for a total of $16.86 million. It is also performing well in Germany where it held on to second place with $1.70 million on 755 screens over the weekend and $33.62 million after four. However, it is starting to slip in the U.K. falling to fifth place with $1.40 million on 400 screens, but its total of $45.15 million in that market is still fantastic. Hancock likely hit $300 million early last week, and it has yet to open in Japan and Italy. More...

International Details - Panda Continues to Perform

July 27th, 2008

For the third week in a row, Kung Fu Panda performed excellently on the international scene, but was not on par with the top of the chart. Over the previous weekend, the film finished in third place with $29.02 million on 4460 screens in 51 screens for a total of $273.20 million. This week the film opened three of the four Scandinavian markets including Denmark where it opened in first place with $1.10 million on 87 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total. Meanwhile, the film only managed third in Norway with $834,000 on 105 screens over the weekend and $1.2 million in total and it managed third place in Sweden with $689,000 on 149 screens and $840,000 in total. Additionally, the film made $3.02 million on 466 screens over the weekend for a total of $27.57 million after three weeks. Next up for the film is Japan this weekend while it opens in Italy at the end of the month. More...

International Details - Panda Throws Its Weight Around

July 20th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda grew to its biggest yet pulling in $45.32 million on 6314 screens in 49 markets for a total of $221.64 million. This includes openings in France where it placed second with $8.64 million on 743 screens for the full week and in Spain where it topped the charts with $6.29 million on 581 screens. The film's best holdover was The U.K. where it slipped a spot to third with $5.55 million on 456 screens for a two-week total of $21.57 million. It also held well in Germany adding $4.54 million on 838 screens for a two-week total of $11.14 million while it now has $20.38 million in Australia, including $3.17 million on 361 screens during this past weekend. Meanwhile, the film has yet to open in Italy or Japan, as well as a few other smaller markets, and should have no trouble reaching $300 million before long. More...

Hellboy is Hot, Box Office is Not

July 15th, 2008

As expected, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army debuted in top spot, but the overall box office was a little on the light side with a total of $151 million. This is 5.5% lower than last weekend, and more disturbingly, 16.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year to date, 2008 is not behind 2007 by 2.4% at $5.04 billion to $5.16 billion. It is too early to push the panic button, but there is certainly reason to be concerned, especially if things don't turn around. More...

International Details - Panda Packs on the Pounds

July 13th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda saw its weekend numbers climb by close to 70%, and its weekend haul of $40.16 million on 5325 screens in 40 markets was the best of its run so far. A run that has brought in $154.13 million so far. However, it still remained in second place thanks to the opening of Hancock. The film had a pair of second place openings including the U.K. where it made $8.63 million on 446 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.96 million. Meanwhile in Germany it was not as strong with $4.48 million on 831 screens, but it still managed second place. The film also slipped to second place in Australia, but it held well down just 24% to $3.83 million on 363 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.63 million. More...

Will Rules the Weekend, but Overall Box Office Not that Super

July 8th, 2008

Hancock lived up to expectations, but it was the only film in the top five that did so. This led to overall box office receipts of just $160 million over the weekend, which was 8% lower than last weekend and 14% lower than the same weekend last year. This is the first time in a month that 2008 hasn't kept pace with 2007, and year-to-date 2008 has again fallen behind 2007, $4.81 billion to $4.84 billion. There's a strong case for mitigating circumstances, however, as July 4th landed on the Friday and Independence Day is not a holiday that is normally associated with strong box office numbers. So 2008 could regain its lead if The Dark Knight proves to be a big hit. More...

International Top of the Chart - Wanted is Desired

July 2nd, 2008

Wanted started its international run in first place with $32.25 million on 2132 screens in 22 markets. The film's best market was Russia, but that's no surprise as the film was directed by Timur Bekmambetov, who was born in the Soviet Union. In that one market the film made $10.70 million on 859 screens, which was the second best opening of the year and seven times more than its nearest competition. (The best opening of the year was by The Very Best Film, which is a local film that broke the record back in January.) Other major markets for Wanted include South Korea where it made $5.36 million on 629 screens over the weekend and $6.81 million in total, which was enough for first place. On the other hand, it had to settle for a close second in the U.K. with $6.35 million on 412 screens. More...

Is it the Weekend Already?

WALL-E has First Place Launch

July 1st, 2008

June ended on a high at the box office with the combined ticket sales reaching $185 million. That's close to 30% more than last weekend and nearly 20% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2008 was able to extend its lead over 2007, but it is still above last year's pace by less than a percent, $4.52 billion to $4.49 billion. With almost nothing but good news recently, it's hard not to get optimistic about the state of the industry right now. More...

WALL-E About to Blast Off?

June 26th, 2008

June ends this weekend and so far there's only been one film not to match expectations, or at least come relatively close to doing so. That said, none of the films have had massive breakout success either. That should change this weekend as WALL-E is tracking well above initial expectations. More...

International Top of the Chart - Indie on the Rise

June 25th, 2008

Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull saw its prospects rise in Japan as it had the best opening of the year, pulling in $13.09 million on 789 screens. The film is still earning 7-digit weekends in the U.K. and France with $2.86 million on 493 screens and $1.30 million on 739 million respectively. After a month of release, the film has made $74,28 million in the former and $35.99 million in the latter. Overall, it made $23.75 million on 5,664 screens in 58 markets for a total of $391.21 million internationally and $682.17 million worldwide. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is now in the top 30 all-time, and it shouldn't have any trouble climbing a few more spots at the very least. More...

Smart Money was on the Spy Spoof

June 23rd, 2008

It was another strong weekend at the box office, at least compared to last year, and almost every film matched expectations nearly perfectly. (Get used to reading that phrase.) Overall the box office earned $143 million during the past three days, which is 20% lower than last weekend. On the other hand, it was nearly 9% higher than the same weekend last year and that was just enough to push 2008 into the lead over 2007 at $4.27 billion to $4.26 billion. Ticket sales are still down nearly 3%, but that too could change. More...

International Details - Sex on the Decline

June 22nd, 2008

Sex and the City was knocked out of top spot with $23.71 million on 5591 screens in 44 markets for a total of $136.00 million after three weeks of release. Its biggest opening came from the Netherlands, which is a midlevel market at best, but it earned $810,000 on 108 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total. This is a very strong opening and the film will have little trouble topping Iron Man in the market and will even come relatively close to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's total. Additionally, the film earned $4.29 million on 452 screens during its second weekend in Australia for a total of $14.88 million while in the U.K. it pulled in $3.50 million on 470 screens over the weekend lifting its total of $39.80 million after three. More...

Will Smart Succeed, or will Audiences Love Guru?

June 19th, 2008

The outlook for this weekend is mixed. On the one hand, very few people are expecting this week's two new releases to match last week's openings. However, most expect them to top last year's new entries, which is the more important task. This, along with the better holdovers, could be enough to push 2008 over 2007's pace for the first time in a long time. More...

Hulk a Smash Hit

June 16th, 2008

Another strong weekend at the box office with the new releases topping expectations, at least combined. Overall, theaters pulled in close to $180 million over the weekend, which was up nearly 3% from last weekend. More importantly, it was up nearly 24% from the same weekend last year. This helped the summer season shoot ahead of last year's pace while year-to-date 2008 is behind 2007's pace by less than 1% at $4.06 billion to $4.07 billion. Before this weekend, 2008 should take the lead in terms of raw dollars, and while it is still more than 3% behind 2007 in terms of attendance, that too could change before long. More...

Weekend Estimates: Return of the Hulk

June 15th, 2008

The Incredible Hulk made an strong debut over the weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday morning. Its estimated $54.54 million weekend is a little below the $62.1 million earned by the first attempt at launching the franchise, but at the high end of expectations. The Happening also did better than expected, picking up $30 million. With Kung Fu Panda holding up well with $34 million, the weekend as a whole was up again compared to last year, and the Summer season is actually ahead of last year's pace, in spite of a relative lack of sure-fire hits. More...

International Details - Panda Feeds on International Audiences

June 15th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda started its international run in third place with $20.46 million on 1521 screens in 9 markets. The film reportedly set records in a number of its smaller, Southeast Asian debuts while its brought in an impressive $8.26 million on 821 screens in Russia and $7.84 million on 632 screens in South Korea (including midweek numbers). Next up for the film is Australia and Mexico next weekend while it has major market opening throughout the summer. More...

Incredible Happening or Hulking Mess?

June 12th, 2008

There was a chance The Incredible Hulk and The Happening would open with nearly identical weekends of around $50 million each. However, the box office potential of the two films has diverged lately with The Incredible Hulk going up a little and The Happening going way down. Combined, they should still top last year's group of new releases, and perhaps even help close the gap on the year-to-date race. More...

IMAX - Panda Softer Than Expected

June 11th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda's opening weekend box office was big, but no bigger than on IMAX where it earned $2.3 million on 95 screens (89 screens domestically and 6 internationally). This is actually weaker than expected, but assuming the movie shows some serious legs, which most IMAX films do, it should still be a success for the format. Next up for IMAX is The Dark Knight starting July 18th. More...

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN!

June 10th, 2008

Sorry, wrong Khan. Mongol, which is a movie about Genghis Khan, opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $27,065 in five theaters, which gives it plenty of room to grow. The overall number one film, Kung Fu Panda, placed second with $14,642. Next up was the second place film on the overall box office charts, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, which made an average of $11,130 in each of its nearly 3500 theaters. The final film to cross the $10,000 mark was The Grocer's Son with $10,587 in its lone theater. More...

Kung Fu Carries the Day

June 9th, 2008

It was a very strong weekend at the box office with the two new releases earning nearly $100 million combined. This helped the overall box office shoot up to $175 million, or 4% higher than last weekend, which is nice, but not spectacular. What is spectacular is the weekend's 29% increase from the same frame last year. Year-to-date, 2008 is still behind 2007, but by less than 2% at $3.81 billion to $3.87 billion. With a little luck, 2008 could catch-up by this time next week. More...

Weekend Estimates: Kung Fu Panda and Zohan Combine for $100 Million

June 8th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda and You Don't Mess With the Zohan both opened strongly over the weekend. Panda made an impressive $60 million, according to Paramount's Sunday estimate, about on par with Pixar's Cars and Monsters, Inc.. Zohan, meanwhile, pulled in an estimated $40 million, which is almost exactly the same as most of Adam Sandler's other comedy releases (see Click, 50 First Dates, Anger Management, Mr. Deeds, Big Daddy and The Waterboy). Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of June 6, 2008

June 8th, 2008

Two wide releases this week, and both had strong sites. This is good news as so far this summer I've been disappointed with the selection of sites more often than not. However, while both were strong, Kung Fu Panda's Official Site was in a class by itself and it easily wins the Weekly Website Award. More...

Panda vs. Hairdresser

June 5th, 2008

June starts off with two potential blockbusters. Fortunately, they share nearly none of their respective target audiences and this could help them both reach their potential. Kung Fu Panda and You Don't Mess With the Zohan are both opening in more than 3,000 theaters (4,000 in the case of the former), and both should hit $10,000 on the per theater chart. Considering this weekend last year was weaker than expected, this bodes well for 2008's shot at playing catch-up. More...

2008 Preview: June

June 1st, 2008

June is filled with top picks, and practically only top picks. The best schedule for the overall health of the movie industry is only two wide releases, the potential blockbuster and the counter-programming release. This month that's exactly what happens; however, almost every week the counter-programming film has a serious shot at $100 million as well. If everything goes well, then we could have 8 films opening this month that crack 9 digits and that would put 2008 back on track. Even a more conservative estimate has four $100 million movies coming out this month, but there's a lot of uncertainty involved here. On the limited front, none of May's limited releases managed to breakout and expand wide, so there's still an opening for sleeper hit of the summer. That role could be filled by The Promotion, which appears to have the best shot at escaping the art hour circuit and reaching multiplexes. More...

Contest - Pandas are in Good Company

May 30th, 2008

White and black, the friendly bears of China
White and black, they rarely reproduce
What shall be done about these Chinese bears?
What shall be done about these friendly bears?
Die, they must die
The pandas must die!

I love that song. Too bad the CD is out of print, or I would have offered a copy or two as prizes. (On a side note, the video for "REMember" is one of the best music video parodies out there.) That's not to say we don't have enough prizes as it is. In order to win these prizes, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Kung Fu Panda. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win Company on Blu-ray, as well as Drew Hastings - Irked and Miffed on DVD and CD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Company on Blu-ray, as well as, Minutemen on DVD and Cory in the House - Newt and Improved on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

There was not much in the way of surprises, and it is hard to look at one film and say it was the big winner, but Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button come the closest. More...

There were not many new releases to chart this week, but we did have a new number one as Hancock took top spot on the sales chart. That film sold 3.02 million units during its first week of release for a total of $61.23 million in consumer retail spending.

More...

International Details - Eye on the Prize

Eagle Eye opened in sixth place on the international chart with $4.51 million on 1,124 screens in 13 markets, much of that coming from two markets: Australia and Mexico. In the former it made $1.42 million on 231 screens while in the latter it made just a hair under $900,000 on 350 screens. In both markets the film finished in second place, while it opens in major markets every week until the end of October, while it doesn't end its run until early next year. More...

International Top Five - Mamma Mia Hits a High Note

September 10th, 2008

Mamma Mia! captured top spot thanks to a record-breaking debut in South Korea. In that market, it opened with $3.40 million on 513 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.08 million, which was the best opening for a musical in South Korean history; however, it still had to settle for second place. The film was also in second place in the U.K. with $2.52 million on 493 screens for a total of $99.42 million after two months of release. Overall, the film made $16.36 million on 3,430 screens in 39 markets for a total of $281.54 million internationally and $417.98 million worldwide. More...

International Top Five - Milestone Weekend for Knight

September 4th, 2008

The Dark Knight fell hard this past weekend, but it still managed a major milestone reaching $400 million internationally while topping $900 million worldwide. The lack of new markets meant its weekend haul was down 43% to $19.46 million on 6124 screens in 62 markets and now has $413.73 million internationally and $916.02 million worldwide. Its best market of the weekend was Germany, where it remained in first place with $4.58 million on 754 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.61 million after two. This is already more than double what the original made in total. Meanwhile the film's best market overall remained the U.K. where it has made $84.08 million, including $1.67 million on 396 screens over this past weekend. More...

International Details - Hell Pulls in the Gold

August 31st, 2008

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army returned to the international chart in sixth place with $7.20 million on 828 screens in 14 markets for a total of $32.93 million. Of that weekend haul, $5.45 million was earned on 464 screens in the U.K., where it topped the charts this past weekend. Compared to the original, this film has made more domestically and more worldwide, while it is nearing its international total with openings in Australia, Spain, Brazil, Germany, France, and other markets left ahead of it. International Details - Cliff Strong Overseas

August 24th, 2008

Ponyo on the Cliff is locked in first place in Japan growing by 13% to $7.75 million on 481 screens over the weekend for a total of $90.47 million at the end of last weekend, and it is likely that it has hit $100 million in the meantime. More...

International Details - Panda Leads the Back of the Pack

August 17th, 2008

Kung Fu Panda slipped to sixth place with $9.34 million on 4736 screens in 47 markets for a total of $349.69 million internationally.

More...
