Weekend projections: The Beekeeper snatches a weekend win

January 28, 2024

The Beekeeper

A strong hold in its third weekend will allow The Beekeeper to put an end to Mean Girls’ party at the top of the box office chart. Weekend predictions: Oscar nominees and Miller’s Girl unlikely to challenge Mean Girls

January 26, 2024

Mean Girls

Substantial expansions by Oscar hopefuls and a Jenna Ortega/Martin Freeman psychological thriller probably won’t be enough to topple Mean Girls from the top of the box office chart this weekend. Theater counts: Mean Girls three-peats on another slow week in theaters

January 25, 2024

Mean Girls

This week looks to be a near replay of last week as the winter doldrums continue. Only one new release makes its way into more than 100 theaters this week and should be no match for the current contenders. After two weeks on the big screen, Mean Girls has earned nearly $53 million from domestic showings, edging out its closest rival, The Beekeeper, at the box office for the majority of its run. The film has also taken in a respectable $16 million overseas for a global take of $69 million. This week it does drop locations, but still holds the top position with 3,544 venues. More...

Weekend projections: Mean Girls wins a quiet weekend as I.S.S. meets low expectations

January 21, 2024

I.S.S.

Bad weather and a lack of major new movies is keeping folks home. In spite of that, this weekend is mostly meeting its low expectations at the box office, with Mean Girls staying at the top of the chart, even though it’s having a slightly disappointing second weekend, and I.S.S. coming in around its very low expectations. With the remaining Holiday films in slow decline, the current reported box office makes this the slowest weekend since November 3, when Five Nights at Freddy’s held on to top spot in spite of a steep second-weekend decline. More...

Weekend predictions: Mean Girls expected to stay on top

January 19, 2024

Mean Girls

The weekend after the MLK Holiday is shaping up to be a quiet one at the box office. The two significant new releases, I.S.S. and Origin aren’t expected to challenge Mean Girls for top spot, and the biggest question is how steeply the comedy-musical will decline after its $28.6-million opening weekend. Theater counts: Mean Girls will stay the widest release, on a slow week at the box office

January 18, 2024

Mean Girls

The pop culture teen comedy took in a robust $28.64 million over its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day total of $37.14 million. The latest standings put the movie nearly $16 million ahead of The Beekeeper, the second-place finisher, which also made its debut last weekend. Weekend projections: Mean Girls hits $28 million on debut, The Beekeeper impressive in second

January 14, 2024

Mean Girls

Mean Girls will post a bright-and-breezy $28 million this weekend, according to Paramount’s Sunday-morning projection. That’s just a shade higher than the $24.4 million earned by the original Mean Girls back in 2004 (although quite a bit less on an inflation-adjusted basis). It’ll cruise to the top of the box office chart this weekend, with The Beekeeper coming in a very respectable second. More...

Weekend predictions: Mean Girls eyeing opening in the high 20s

January 12, 2024

Mean Girls

Mean Girls looks set to post a peppy opening weekend somewhere in the high $20-millions, based on our model’s assessment of its $3.25 million in previews on Thursday. That will give it an easy weekend win, although The Beekeeper also looks as though it’ll post good numbers this weekend, and several Holiday holdovers are still bringing in respectable business. More...

Theater counts: Mean Girls ends Wonka’s reign as widest release

January 11, 2024

Mean Girls

After four weeks of being the widest release in the land, Wonka will slide into the second-place spot this week as the $470-million worldwide earner makes way for newcomer, Mean Girls. The Willy Wonka origin story film topped the domestic box office chart on three out of four of it's weekends, taking a backseat only to studio sibling Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom when the latter opened at number one during Wonka’s second weekend on the big screen. Along with Mean Girls, three other wide releases make their debut this week, including a long-awaited arrival to North American cinemas. More...

January 7, 2024

Anyone But You

Wonka will take its third bow at the top of the box office chart this weekend, with Warner Bros. projecting a $14.43-million weekend for the musical, taking it to $164.65 million at the domestic box office. It’ll also pass $300 million internationally this weekend for a global haul of $465.8 million. The other star this weekend is Anyone But You, which will increase its earnings by 9% compared to last weekend. It’ll remain in fifth place with $9.5 million this weekend and $43.7 million expected in total by the end of the day today. New release Night Swim is making less of a splash with an expected $12-million debut. More...

Weekend predictions: Wonka favorite for another weekend win

January 5, 2024

Wonka

Wonka looks likely to top the box office chart for the third time this weekend, thanks to another strong hold and a mediocre opening for Blumhouse’s Night Swim. The legacy of the New Year still hangs over predictions this weekend, making it hard to be sure where everything will land, and Night Swim still has a shot at making it to the top, as well as no less than four returning films that have some theoretical chance of topping the chart. What we can say for sure is that we’re heading into a slow period at the box office. More...

Theater counts: Wonka remains widest release in a quiet start to 2024

January 4, 2024

Wonka

After three weeks in North American cinemas, Wonka once again leads the pack as widest release, as it has done since its debut on December 15th. The Willy Wonka origin story has gobbled up over $147 million in domestic earnings in its first 20 days, while bringing in just above $253 million from international markets, catapulting its global take to over $400 million. The film does drop below 4,000 locations this week for the first time, but will still be available in 3,817 theaters, which easily holds off newcomer Night Swim’s starting count of 3,250 cinemas. More...
