A strong hold in its third weekend will allow The Beekeeper to put an end to Mean Girls’ party at the top of the box office chart. The Jason Statham action movie will decline only 14% from last weekend, with MGM projecting a $7.4-million weekend—just enough to eclipse Mean Girls’ expected $7.3 million.

Theater counts: Mean Girls three-peats on another slow week in theaters

This week looks to be a near replay of last week as the winter doldrums continue. Only one new release makes its way into more than 100 theaters this week and should be no match for the current contenders. After two weeks on the big screen, Mean Girls has earned nearly $53 million from domestic showings, edging out its closest rival, The Beekeeper, at the box office for the majority of its run. The film has also taken in a respectable $16 million overseas for a global take of $69 million. This week it does drop locations, but still holds the top position with 3,544 venues.

Bad weather and a lack of major new movies is keeping folks home. In spite of that, this weekend is mostly meeting its low expectations at the box office, with Mean Girls staying at the top of the chart, even though it’s having a slightly disappointing second weekend, and I.S.S. coming in around its very low expectations. With the remaining Holiday films in slow decline, the current reported box office makes this the slowest weekend since November 3, when Five Nights at Freddy’s held on to top spot in spite of a steep second-weekend decline.

Theater counts: Mean Girls will stay the widest release, on a slow week at the box office

After schooling its competition at the domestic box office last weekend, Mean Girls will add 35 locations in its second week, propelling the film into a solid 3,826 theaters. The pop culture teen comedy took in a robust $28.64 million over its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day total of $37.14 million. The latest standings put the movie nearly $16 million ahead of The Beekeeper, the second-place finisher, which also made its debut last weekend. Mean Girls likewise outperformed its original incarnation, as the 2004 film scored $24.43 million over its opening session.

Mean Girls will post a bright-and-breezy $28 million this weekend, according to Paramount’s Sunday-morning projection. That’s just a shade higher than the $24.4 million earned by the original Mean Girls back in 2004 (although quite a bit less on an inflation-adjusted basis). It’ll cruise to the top of the box office chart this weekend, with The Beekeeper coming in a very respectable second.

The Willy Wonka origin story film topped the domestic box office chart on three out of four of it's weekends, taking a backseat only to studio sibling Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom when the latter opened at number one during Wonka’s second weekend on the big screen. Wonka will take its third bow at the top of the box office chart this weekend, with Warner Bros. projecting a $14.43-million weekend for the musical, taking it to $164.65 million at the domestic box office. It’ll also pass $300 million internationally this weekend for a global haul of $465.8 million. The other star this weekend is Anyone But You, which will increase its earnings by 9% compared to last weekend. It’ll remain in fifth place with $9.5 million this weekend and $43.7 million expected in total by the end of the day today. New release Night Swim is making less of a splash with an expected $12-million debut.

Wonka looks likely to top the box office chart for the third time this weekend, thanks to another strong hold and a mediocre opening for Blumhouse’s Night Swim. The legacy of the New Year still hangs over predictions this weekend, making it hard to be sure where everything will land, and Night Swim still has a shot at making it to the top, as well as no less than four returning films that have some theoretical chance of topping the chart. What we can say for sure is that we’re heading into a slow period at the box office.

After three weeks in North American cinemas, Wonka once again leads the pack as widest release, as it has done since its debut on December 15th. The Willy Wonka origin story has gobbled up over $147 million in domestic earnings in its first 20 days, while bringing in just above $253 million from international markets, catapulting its global take to over $400 million. The film does drop below 4,000 locations this week for the first time, but will still be available in 3,817 theaters, which easily holds off newcomer Night Swim’s starting count of 3,250 cinemas.
