2016 - Awards Season: SAG - Nominations

December 14, 2016

Manchester by the Sea

The Screen Actors Guild were the third group to announce their nominations for this awards season. So far there have been three different films earning the most nominations. This could mean the Oscar race will be a lot closer than in past years. This time around Manchester by the Sea led the way with four nominations.

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture

Notes and Reactions...

  • Manchester by the Sea earned four nods, including best ensemble and three of the four acting categories. It was already seen as one of the Oscar favorites, so this doesn’t change much.
  • Likewise, Moonlight was tied for second with three nominations and it too is expected to be a major Oscar contender. Fences also earned three nominations and it will likely earn three Oscar nominations as well.
  • Captain Fantastic picked up a couple of nominations, which was a pleasant surprise.
  • Both films from the M.C.U. earned nominations for stunt work. Vote splitting could cost either of them the win.
  • Sully and Silence were shut out. Again, I don’t think this is a snub, because I wasn’t hearing much in the way of serious Oscar buzz for either film.
  • Loving was snubbed, which is a surprise. I thought Ruth Negga was a likely nominee.
  • Lily Tomlin earned a Lifetime Achievement Award. She should have won for Grandma.
