U.K. is Virgin Territory

September 11th, 2005

The 40-Year Old Virgin topped the U.K. marked with an impressive $3.26 million on 394 screens in the U.K., but this is probably not indicative of its potential in other international markets. The film should do well in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, but will likely struggle in non-English speaking markets. (Germany may be an exception.) More...

War Ends World Tour with a Blast

September 4th, 2005

War of the Worlds opened in its last international market over the weekend making $3.0 million on 583 screens in China. That's about 10% more money that Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith earned, but War of the Worlds needed nearly double the number of screens. Overall the film added $4.5 million to its $345 million international total, easily the second best of the year so far. More...

Slow Dancing to $100 million

May 8th, 2005

Golden Week helped Shall We Dance? climb 19% to $2,250,195 for the weekend and $7,270,348 during its run. The film now has $90.3 million internationally and could break $100 million if it continues to show strong legs in Japan. More...

International: Constantine Continues to Climb

May 1st, 2005

It was a good news, bad news kind of weekend for Constantine. The film remained in top spot in Japan with $2,330,027 on 349 screens for a $9,011,671 running tally in the market. Bad news, it dropped 37% during its second weekend in the market, which is really steep for Japan. Overall the film brought in $3 million on 1,200 screens in 40 markets for a international box office of $136.4 million. More...

Hitch still Connecting with Moviegoers

April 24th, 2005

Hitch is just coasting on holdovers now, and will be until it opens in Japan at the beginning of June. This week it added $5.1 million from 3000 screens in 55 markets to its already impressive $170.4 million international total and with soft week to week drop-offs and a good showing in Japan and it will have a $200 million future. This week the film added $643,359 in its fifth weekend in France for a $12,785,670 total in the market, $110,000 in its second weekend in Argentina, (rising to first place in the meantime) as well as other, smaller markets. More...

International Box Office Busier than Weekend Before

April 17th, 2005

The Pacifier finally debut across Australia after playing in Queensland and Victoria for the past two weeks; the massive expansion allowed the film to climb to first place with $1.125 million on 267 screens. That lifted its total in the market to $3.41 million so far and the film should have strong legs. Add to that its $1.75 million opening in Spain and $590,000 in Belgium and the film managed $4.1 million over the weekend, which doubled its early total to $8.1 million. More...

Newcomers Earn Trifecta on Top of Home Market Charts

April 16th, 2005

Three new DVDs topped the DVD Rental Charts, the VHS Rental Charts and the DVD Sales Charts, in the same order. Leading the way was the wonderful movie, Sideways with $6.70 million in DVD rentals and $1.03 million in VHS rentals. The film also lead the week in DVD sales with 1.5 million units sold on just its first day of release. More...

Incredibles Ride into the Sunset

April 9th, 2005

After the Sunset stole top spot from The Incredibles on both the DVD and VHS rental charts, (the latter film did triumph on the sale charts.) The film, which only made $28.3 million during its entire domestic run, made $6.00 million in DVD rentals and $900,000 in VHS rentals. More...

French Film Finishes Fifth

February 20th, 2005

Iznogoud: Calife a la place du calife, a movie based on a Asterix and Obelix spin off of sorts, dominated the French box office taking in $7.1 million, more than double the second place film and more than a third of the top ten total. It is also enough to push it into the Top Five on the international scene, dropping Finding Neverland into sixth place. Unfortunately, like the several films made in the Asterix and Obelix series, this one is unlikely to make much of an impact outside the French speaking markets. More...

Ocean Steals International Box Office Crown Back

January 26th, 2005

The International Box Office Race is certainly interesting, as Ocean's Twelve recaptured the lead this weekend with $14.4 million on 4,600 screens in 58 markets and now sits at $170.4 million internationally and $292.8 million worldwide. A large chunk of that total came from Japan, where the film earned $6.8 million (including sneak peaks) on 510 screens, while ending Howl's Moving Castle's nine week reign on top. While this was a strong performance, it was 20% lower that the original's debut in the same market. More...

Alexander Reigns over International Audiences

January 19th, 2005

After a massive opening last week in Spain, Alexander took top spot on the international charts thanks to a strong opening in Italy, Brazil and Hong Kong. The film managed first place in all three markets with $3.87 million on 446 screens in Italy, $906,900 on 193 screens in Brazil and $275,244 on 30 screens in Hong Kong. Holdovers were not as kind to the Sword and Sandal epic as it dropped nearly 50% in the U.K., Spain and France. Overall the film brought in $14.5 million on 3600 screens in 51 markets for a running tally of $88 million. And while the film will easily cross $100 million internationally, which is roughly 3 times its domestic figure, it has to be looked at as a disappointment financially. More...

Incredibles have a Super Weekend

December 1st, 2004

With a nearly 3-1 lead over its nearest competitor, The Incredibles took top spot on the International Box Office charts this week with $44.3 million on 4,362 screens in 22 markets for a running tally of $59.1 million. The film opened number one in all twelve markets and in a few of the markets the film debuted in this week it was able to break the record for biggest debut by an animated films. However, in others it fell short to either Finding Nemo, (France) or Shrek 2 (the U.K. and Spain.) Its biggest single market was the U.K., where the brought in $18.1 million, including sneak peaks, which was a Disney record. Other highlights include $9.2 million in France, $5.6 million in Spain, $5.4 million in Italy, and $1.3 million in Belgium. Considering the results so far it should challenge for supremacy among the elite animated films and $400 million to $500 million isn't out of the question. More...

Bridget Slims Down but Still Number One

November 24th, 2004

Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason's second round of openings was no quite as strong as last week's, but it was still more than enough to keep its first place finish at the international box office. Overall the British comedy took in $20.6 million on 1,854 screens in 18 markets lifting its tally to $59 million. Out of the new openings, the film was most impressive in Spain with $2.6 million while its best market overall was the U.K. where the film dropped just 29% to $9.3 million. The film is still tracking well ahead of the original and is becoming one of the monster hits of the fall. More...

Incredibles Still Super

November 15th, 2004

A busy weekend resulted in four new films in the top five, but that didn't help the overall box office, which was only up 0.1% from last weekend. The comparison with last year is a lot better with a 8.7% improvement. This was the first serious improvement on the yearly comparison in over a month. Year-to-date 2004's box office now sits at $7.841 billion, just 2.2% ahead of 2003's box office at this point. Unless December shows a marked improvement, 2004 will be the second year in a row with drops in total admissions. More...

U.K. is Virgin Territory

More...

March 28th, 2005

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and a few from the growing TV on DVD section including this week's winner, The Lone Gunmen - The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon More...

More...

Holidays Coming Early

November 12th, 2004

This weekend also sees the opening of three more films in wide release, (including Polar Express, which opened on Wednesday) and another with opens in just several hundred theatres, but should still finish in the top ten.
