Home Market Releases for June 27th, 2017

T2 Trainspotting

It’s a really slow week on the home market. (Next week is even worse. ) The Fate of the Furious is the biggest release of the week, but it is only coming out on Video on Demand, so I would wait. The biggest release of the week is Power Rangers, but it feels like a pilot to a TV show and not a self-contained movie. The best new release of the week is T2: Trainspotting and the Blu-ray Combo Pack. That said, if you don’t have Home Movies yet, then buy the Complete Series right now.

Absolutely Anything - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This movie has so much comedic talent, but the reviews are terrible. It did so poorly here that it isn’t even getting a Blu-ray release.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A father and son coroner team get the body of an unknown woman. When they begin the autopsy, strange things start to occur. This film earned great reviews and I was looking forward to the Blu-ray release, but there are absolutely no extras on either the DVD or Blu-ray. It is still worth picking up, but a good selection of extras would have made it a Pick of the Week contender.

The Belko Experiment - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film had a lot of pre-release buzz, especially for a smaller film. However, its reviews were only mixed and it struggled at the box office. There are not a lot of extras, which further reduces its value.

Berlin Syndrome - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This film earned good reviews, but not good enough to thrive in limited release. It is selling well on DVD, but the lack of a Blu-ray release hurts its overall value.

CHiPS - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This movie didn’t seem like a good idea and critics and audiences agreed. It earned some of the worst reviews of the year and it bombed at the box office. The extras are better than expected, but that’s not enough to lift it to even a rental.

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This Anime mini-series is set in the near future of 2017 (It came out five years ago.) and is about a war in Europe and a rescue mission gone wrong. The reviews on My Anime List are good ranging from a high of 7.81 / 10 to a low of 7.26 / 10. Unfortunately, the series finale did earn the weakest reviews.

Dirty Dancing: Television Special - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Stick with the original.

The Lodger: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is the third film Alfred Hitchcock directed and the first to show his style and talent. The silent film is presented here along with Downhill, another Hitchcock silent film, as well as new featurettes, archival interviews, and more. It is certainly worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Naruto Shippuden Uncut: Set 31 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This TV show has earned amazing reviews, but it has also lasted 500 episodes. I can’t imagine trying to watch all 500 episodes trying to catch up. It would take more than a week without interruptions to do that. If you treated it as a job and watched 40 hours a week, it would still take over a month.

The Pink Panther Film Collection: Starring Peter Sellers - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This box set contains the Peter Sellers installments of the franchise. They are, for the most part, excellent. The other three movies in the original series are also coming out on Blu-ray. They are mostly garbage.

Power Rangers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This was the first of a planned series of movies, but it struggled at the box office, so unless merchandising was a huge, there won’t be a sequel. Is the movie better than its box office numbers? Is it a shame there won’t be any more films? Read our review to find out.

Prison Break Event Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Creating a mini-series based on a long-running show that ended years ago seems to be a new trend. This one, like most of the rest, earned mixed reviews, because it didn’t live up to the original show. Also coming out this week is the new Complete Series Megaset.

The Rockford Files: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is a fantastic show and definitely worth picking up; however, keep in mind that this is a Mill Creek release and they don’t do remasters for their Blu-ray release. It does look better than the original DVD releases, but not true high quality.

The Strain: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A TV series about vampires. The show earned great reviews the first season, but by season three the reviews dropped below the overall positive level. Additionally, the ratings have dropped and season four will be the last season. If you have stuck with it this far, I would still recommend waiting till season four is done before buying season three. This might be the time to drop the show.

T2: Trainspotting - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The delayed sequel to Trainspotting. Because it is a sequel, it won’t be as fresh as the original, but can it compensate in other ways? Check out our review for my opinion.

Yu-Gi-Oh: The Dark Side of Dimensions - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
An Anime series aimed at young boys and primarily around to sell cards. It is better than the description makes it sound, but unless you are in the target demographic, there are better options out there.
