Home Market Releases for September 19th, 2017

September 20, 2017

The Big Sick

I think it is a really good week on the home market. The biggest release of the week is Wonder Woman, which is also one of the best wide releases of the year. The extras are strong and the Blu-ray Combo Pack / 3D Combo Pack are Pick of the Week contenders. It isn’t the winner, as The Big Sick is one of the best movies I’ve seen all year and the DVD / Blu-ray Combo Pack is loaded with extras.

Adventures of Captain Marvel - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
When this 12-part serial was shown in theaters in 1941, Captain Marvel, a.k.a., Shazam, was more popular than Superman. One lawsuit is all that it took to change that. (If you want more details, you can watch an overview here.) The Blu-ray has an audio commentary track and it costs just $20, which isn’t a bad deal. It is worth picking up, especially if you are a fan of early Super Hero movies, TV shows, etc.

Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The show that kicked off the Arrowverse. For those that don’t know, the Arrowverse is the name of the shared continuity D.C. shows on the C.W. I’ve only seen a few episodes of this show and I’m not that impressed. I felt it took itself too seriously and I prefer shows like Supergirl or The Flash to this one. That said, I’m in the minority here and fans of the show will certainly want to pick up the DVD / Blu-ray. The extras include the ComicCon panel, a trio of featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. I would have liked an audio commentary track or two, but this is still a good selection.

Bates Motel: Season Five - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The fifth and final season of this award-worthy show comes out on DVD and Blu-ray this week. There are not a lot of extras on the DVD or Blu-ray. Meanwhile, you can also buy the Complete Series on DVD and Blu-ray as well.

The Big Sick - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A romantic dramedy about the real life story of how Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon fell in love. The film is the biggest limited release of the year so far, earning more than $40 million. Did it deserve this success? Read our review to find out.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 40th Anniversary Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
One of the best Sci-fi films of all time. I’m not sold on 4K, but if you don’t own this movie already, then this is a must have. Even if you already own it, there are several new extras, so it could be worth the double-dip.

Firefly: Complete Series: 15th Anniversary Collector's Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of the best short-lived TV shows of all time. Unfortunately, there’s nothing new on the Blu-ray, so it is not worth the double-dip.

The Hero - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Sam Elliott plays an aging Western movie star. He gets diagnosed with cancer and decides he needs to fix the problems in his life. The film did well in limited release, but never managed to expand even semi-wide. Is the movie good, but not good enough to escape limited release? Or did it deserve better? Check out our review for my opinion.

Innocent Blood - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A vampire film from the early 1990s. The reviews were mixed, but it has since found a bit of a cult following on the home market. There are no extras on the Blu-ray, which significantly lowers its value.

The Lost World - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is the silent film classic from 1925. Extras on the Blu-ray include a deleted scene and two short films. If you are a fan of early Dinosaur movies, then this is a must have.

Madam Secretary: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This show earned good reviews, but not great reviews, during its first season. Since then, it hasn’t gotten enough reviews to even get a Tomatometer Score.

Modern Family: Season 8 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I have reviewed all but one of the previous seasons, but Fox has switched to an online screener system, which is terribly annoying. That said, it is one of the few TV shows that I actually watch each week and I think it is still holding up, despite being on the air for 8 seasons. I’ve already ordered the DVD, but I won’t be able to review it when it gets here, not unless screeners really dry up over the next few weeks.

Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls: Premium Box Set - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This $100 box set is one of the best-selling new releases of the week. It’s borderline Anime porn. $100 of borderline Anime porn.

One Piece: Collection Twenty - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
One of the best-known, longest-lasting Anime titles of all time. It would take about two weeks to watch every episode of this show, if you didn’t take any breaks at all. The reviews on My Anime List are among the best of the entire site, but I can’t imagine having enough free time to get caught up on the show if you haven’t started by now.

Porky Pig 101 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I said I was not going to buy another Looney Tune release until they started putting out chronological releases. Well, they listened and therefore I’m going to buy this. I hope it is the first of many chronological releases. I won’t even be upset about double-dips, or triple-dips, but the lack of Blu-rays are a bit of a pain.

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-selling new releases of the week. I’m not sure how to explain that.

Timeless: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show earned great reviews, but was canceled after just one season. Then it was uncanceled for a ten-episode second season. If the show were back to wrap up the story, then I would be happy about that. However, I don’t think that’s the case. I think it is back to see if it can find a bigger audience this time around, in which case it will likely be canceled again very soon.

The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest documentary series from Ken Burns. It goes without saying that the reviews are impeccable.

Wonder Woman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo
Video on Demand
This movie set a lot of records, including biggest movie directed by a woman, as well as the biggest domestic hit of the summer. There are a ton of extras, but no audio commentary tracks, which is a shame. There are ten featurettes, half of which are over 10 minutes long, many of which are substantial. There’s a short film with Etta, some deleted scenes, and outtakes. It is certainly worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week. It is also coming out as an Amazon Exclusive With a Figurine. It’s $130. That’s a lot to ask for.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon:
No Christmas releases this week.

The Bad Batch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Certain Women: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Hana-Bi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Illustrated Man - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray

The Prison - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Red Line 7000 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
School-Live: Premium Box Set - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Not much in the way of secondary Blu-ray releases this week. School-Live is the most interesting one, at least for me. It is a Moe Slice-of-Life Anime with a twist that allows it to rise above the usual entries in this sub-genre. Moe Slice-of-Life Anime are shows that focus on cute / endearing characters doing cute / endearing things. I’m not going to give away the twist, but it is a lot darker than most Moe shows deal with. That said, spending $90 on a six-disc set (two Blu-ray, two DVDs, and two CD soundtrack) is a bit much.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Wonder Woman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
There’s a 3D release this week and it is the biggest and one of the best releases of the week.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Conan the Barbarian - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo
The Legend of Hercules - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo
Starship Troopers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Wonder Woman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo
Wonder Woman is the only 4K release that’s even close to be worth picking up. If you already have 4K, then it is worth spending the extra money. On the other hand, it is not enough to make upgrading to 4K worth it.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Bates Motel - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Friends - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
How I Met Your Mother - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Bates Motel is arguably the best deal here. At least its new, while the others are re-releases that are not that much cheaper than before.

The Book of Henry - Reviews - Video on Demand
England is Mine - Reviews - Video on Demand
Her Last Will - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Motivation 3: The Next Generation - No Reviews - Video on Demand

One Last Heist - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - Reviews - Video on Demand (Movie Only)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - Reviews - Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is by far the biggest VOD release of the week; however, I’ve grown tired of the franchise and I didn’t even bother to request a screener. The Book of Henry is much smaller, but for many it fits into the so bad it’s good category.
