Theater Averages: Tonya Skates its Way to $66,039

December 12, 2017

I, Tonya

There was another Oscar contender on top of the theater average chart this weekend, as I, Tonya earned an average of $66,039 in four theaters. Call Me by Your Name was the next best film with an average of $31,761 in nine theaters. The film isn’t expanding as fast as one would expect, given its theater average, but this could be because the studio doesn’t think it has mainstream appeal. The Shape of Water was close behind with an average of $27,843 in 41 theaters and it has already earned some measure of mainstream success. The final film in the $10,000 club was Darkest Hour with an average of $13,989 in 53 theaters.

There were a few other new limited releases, but none of them reported their box office numbers. Most of these were playing on VOD, so this is not unusual.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Square was one of five films to cross $1 million since this time last week. Unfortunately, it will go no further.
  • Likewise, My Friend Dahmer got to $1 million, but it will go no further.
  • On the other hand, Darkest Hour topped $1 million late in the weekend and it will have no trouble getting to $2 million this coming weekend.
  • Call Me by Your Name before the weekend. How long it will take to get to $2 million depends on if it finally expands significantly this weekend or not.
  • The Shape of Water earned more than $1 million over the weekend and it still has plenty of room to grow, so there’s no telling were it will end up.
  • The Man Who Invented Christmas held on better than expected, which helped it reach $4 million over the weekend. However, its theater average is now below $1,000 and I suspect most studios will drop it before Christmas.
  • The Florida Project hit $5 million during the weekend, barely. This is as far as it will get.
  • The Disaster Artist expanded nationwide going from under $2 million to $7.5 million over the weekend. It still has some room to grow, so it will quickly pass more milestones.
  • On the other hand, Roman J. Israel, Esq. reached $10 million over the weekend, but will go no further.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri reached $15 million before the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $20 million.
  • Lady Bird made it all the way to $20 million over the weekend. Its weekend haul has peaked, but that won’t stop it from climbing the domestic yearly chart for a little while longer. By the end of the weekend, the film was already ahead of Rough Night and there are plenty of other wise releases it will top before it is done.
