The Post

The Post remained the top film on the theater average chart for the second weekend is a row, earning an average of $62,342 in nine theaters and has earned nearly $2 million at the box office. It wasn’t the only film in the $10,000 club; in fact, there were seven such films. Second place went to Phantom Thread, with an average of $54,124 in four theaters. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was the best of the wide releases earning an average of $13,294. I, Tonya earned an average of $12,461 in 49 theaters during its fourth weekend of release. The overall number one film, The Last Jedi, was right behind with $12,410. Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds earned an average of $11,370 in 17 theaters, while the final film in the $10,000 club was Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, which earned an average of $11,298 in four theaters.

There were only a handful of other new limited releases, and I’m not sure all of them count, as some debuted the previous Monday and one could argue last weekend was their opening weekend. Molly’s Game did very well with an average of $8,671 in 271 theaters. That’s amazing for such a wide opening. Likewise, Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes was playing in 21 theaters, earning an average of $8,615. This is a lot for a foreign-language release. In the Fade struggled with an average of $3,485 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Post topped $1 million before the weekend. It got to $2 million on Tuesday and will have no trouble expanding significantly this weekend. Expanding truly wide still isn’t a 100% guarantee, but this fast start will help convince theater owners to book the movie.
  • I, Tonya skated past $2 million over the weekend.
  • Tiger Zinda Hai reached $4 million over the weekend and was nearly at $5 million by the end of business on Sunday.
  • Likewise, Call Me by Your Name reached $4 million early in the weekend and nearly hit $5 million by the end of the weekend.
  • Molly’s Game earned $1 million during its opening day, got to $2 million and $3 million before the weekend, and $4 million and $5 million during the weekend. It hit $6 million on New Year’s Day.
  • Loving Vincent hit $6 million before the weekend, and while that’s as far as it will go, this is great for a limited release.
  • The Shape of Water topped $10 million before the weekend and $15 million over the weekend. It is rapidly approaching the top 100 on the 2017 domestic chart.
  • Darkest Hour also crossed $15 million during the weekend and it too is about to reach the top 100 on the 2017 domestic chart.
  • Lady Bird surpassed $30 million over the weekend and by the end of the weekend, it was in 74th place on the domestic yearly chart, just ahead of Kidnap.
