Home Market Releases for January 23rd, 2018

Jane

It’s a really slow week on the home market. There are only a few releases that went anywhere at the box office, led by Jigsaw, which is a bad movie. Meanwhile, Geostorm is so bad it’s good. It’s fun, if you are into B movies, but it’s not Pick of the Week material. The only real contenders are Jane, which is only coming out on Video on Demand, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, which is getting a Two-Disc Special Edition. In the end, I went with Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, mainly because Jane doesn’t come out on DVD / Blu-ray until next month.

Ace Attorney: Part One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
An Anime based on the popular video game series. Unfortunately, the end result is mixed. It’s not terrible, but fans of the video game will likely want to stick with the games.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I was really hoping to get a screener for this movie. It is certainly one of the best-known “So bad it’s good” films around. The Blu-ray has a lot of extras, including audio commentary track, 30 minutes of featurettes, deleted scenes, a lot more. It is absolutely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week, if you are into bad movies.

Dario Argento's Opera - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Someone is stalking an opera singer and killing anyone close to her. It is among the best-reviewed and best-known films in Dario Argento. There doesn’t appear to be any extras, which is a real shame. It is still worth checking out if you are a fan of the genre in general, worth picking up if you are a fan of Dario Argento’s work in particular.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This TV series earned good reviews, but its ratings were only enough to last past two seasons. There’s a slim chance Netflix will go ahead with a third season, but that depends on the show’s binging numbers. If you really want season three to come out, then buying the DVD / Blu-ray might make a difference.

Earth: One Amazing Day - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Nature documentaries look amazing in high definition, so if you have made the leap to 4K, then this is worth picking up.

Geostorm - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This movie was delayed three times, it had an expensive round of reshoots, earned terrible reviews, and bombed at the box office. I think it will find a receptive audience on the home market. It’s bad, but it’s bad in an entertaining way. That said, I would wait till you can rent it on VOD to watch it, or maybe even wait til it’s on Netflix.

Goodbye Christopher Robin - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I remember hearing Awards Season buzz before this film came out, but the actual reviews were only good and not Award-worthy. It is still worth checking out and with extras like an audio commentary track and some featurettes, it is worth picking up if you are a fan of biopics.

Jigsaw - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
They tried to bring back the Saw franchise, but it didn’t work. Unless you are a hardcore fan of these movies, you can skip it.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is divisive, to put it mildly. The film’s reviews are good, but more than half of the reviews on Amazon are 1-star reviews. It is good enough to check out, but I would really start with a rental. In fact, there is only one extra on the DVD / Blu-ray, so even if you saw the movie and liked it, it’s probably still only worth a rental.

Teen Titans: The Complete First Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This show had a lot of fans and they were surprised it was canceled. I heard a rumor it was canceled because too many girls like it. The studio worried that it was competing with their other shows aimed at girls, while if too many girls liked it, boys would no longer watch it. I don’t know if that’s true, or if something silly caused a good show to end too soon.

Thank You for Your Service - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Another Oscar-bait film on this week’s list that didn’t quite live up to expectations with critics. This one also bombed in theaters opening below the Mendoza Line. The box office troubles meant the DVD / Blu-ray only has a couple of featurettes as extras. It is still worth checking out, but for most people, a rental is enough.

Not much in the way of secondary Blu-ray releases. The Woman Who Left is probably your best choice.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
10 Cloverfield Lane - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Cloverfield - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
10 Cloverfield Lane is the better of the two secondary 4K releases this week.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
120 Beats per Minute - Reviews - Video on Demand
A Bad Moms Christmas - Reviews - Video on Demand
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - Reviews - Video on Demand
Boyfriend Killer - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Jane - Reviews - Video on Demand
Only The Brave - Reviews - Video on Demand

The best secondary VOD release of the week is Jane. It’s not even close. I was tempted to give it the Pick of the Week and not even bother waiting for it to come out on DVD / Blu-ray.
