Theater Averages: New Releases Can’t Take Down Black Panther

February 27, 2018

Black Panther

Black Panther was the only film in the $10,000 club this past weekend earning an average of $27,776 in just over 4,000 theaters. If the film earned this during its opening weekend, it would have been the best theater average for any film that has opened in 2018. Mary and the Witch’s Flower had a, well, complicated weekend. It was officially only playing in three theaters, but on Saturday, it had special screenings in over 400 theaters, earning nearly $200,000 in the process. In the three theaters where it had regular showings, it had a theater average of about $2,500. That’s good for a film that has been in theaters for six weeks.

The next best new limited release was Operation Red Sea, which earned an average of $9,690 in 45 theaters. There have been more than a few Chinese films to do relatively well in limited release, so perhaps that nation’s film industry can get a foothold here. The Young Karl Marx was next with an average of $8,699 in three theaters, which is also good for a foreign-language film. Agent Mr. Chan was next with an average of $6,224 in ten theaters. November did okay with $4,300 in its lone theater. Meanwhile, the only English-language film, The Cured, bombed with an average of $1,625 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Detective Chinatown 2 hit $1 million before the weekend.
  • It took a special screening, but Mary and the Witches Flower reached $2 million over the weekend.
  • 2018 Oscar Shorts also made it to $2 million, but it made it there before the weekend. Its box office numbers will collapse rather quickly after the Oscars are handed out.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri just made it to $50 million over the weekend. It is expected to be one of the big winners on Oscar night, so it is very likely not finished its box office run.
  • The Shape of Water just made it to $55 million and it too should win several Oscars over the weekend, keeping it in theaters for a while longer.
