International Box Office: Uprising Starts Out on Up with $122.4 million

Pacific Rim: Uprising easily earned first place on the international chart with $122.4 million in 61 markets during its opening weekend. The film earned first place in China with $63.80 million over the weekend for a total opening of $65.19 million including previews. There were two markets who could claim second place: Russia and South Korea. In Russia, the film earned $6.76 million on 1,538 screens. Meanwhile in South Korea, it opened with $5.27 million on 1,143 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.80 million.

Tomb Raider was pushed into second place with $34.1 million on 20,290 screens in 66 markets for totals of $170.0 million internationally and $211.4 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Japan, where it earned $2.3 million on 517 screens. Its biggest market overall was China, were it added $11.64 million to its running haul, which now sits at $69.90 million after two weeks of release.

Peter Rabbit rose from fourth to third with $25.85 million on 13,277 screens in 47 markets for totals of $75.95 million internationally and $182.76 million. The film opened in second place in Russia with $4.21 million on 1,371 screens. It also earned more than $2 million in Australia ($2.81 million on 278 screens) and in Germany ($2.29 million on 652).

Black Panther fell to fourth place with $12.9 million in 57 markets for totals of $606.4 million internationally and $1.238 billion worldwide. The film crossed $100 million in China with $2.69 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $103.65 million. The film is now in third place in the MCU, behind only The Avengers and Age of Ultron.

The Boss Baby returned to the chart in fifth place with $7.6 million over the weekend for totals of $332.6 million internationally and $507.6 million worldwide. All of its weekend haul came from a second place debut in Japan. The film’s opening in Japan was the biggest ever for DreamWorks Animation in that market.
