Weekend Wrap-Up: Infinity Tops Charts, can’t Quite Match Guardians Debut

It was a relatively good weekend at the box office with every film in the top five matching or beating expectations. This includes Avengers: Infinity War, which had the second best second weekend of all time, earning $114.77 million. Overall, the box office fell 46% from last weekend, but $169 million is still a good total. It is 13% lower than the same weekend last year, but it had to go up against Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opening weekend, so being this close is actually a positive result. Year-to-date, 2018 has pulled in $4.05 billion, which is 5.6% or $220 million higher than last year’s pace.
Infinity War added $114.77 million over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $453.11 million. It has become the fourth biggest domestic hit in the MCU and has likely already overtaken Age of Ultron for third place. The film got to $450 million a day slower than The Force Awakens and the lack of holidays will result in Infinity War falling further and further behind. That said, the studio’s share of the domestic box office is already about $250 million, while it has earned even more than that internationally. Unfortunately, the film went over budget and cost between $300 million and $400 million to make, so it will need another $100 million to $200 million worldwide to break even. It will get there this coming weekend.
Overboard was almost exactly $100 million behind with $14.77 million during its opening weekend. This is a little better than predictions. Its reviews are barely over 30% positive, but it did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, so it might actually have good legs. The film only cost $12 million to make, so as long as its advertising budget wasn’t too much more than that, it should break even early in its home market run.
A Quiet Place was next with $7.76 million over the weekend for a total of $160.06 million after a month of release. It will start losing theaters, especially when Deadpool 2 hits theaters, but it has long since earned a profit.
I Feel Pretty earned $5.05 million over the weekend for a total of $37.95 million after three weeks of release. It could reach $50 million domestically; however, its theater average is just $1,563, so sharp declines in its theater count might prevent that.
Rampage rounded out the top five with $4.64 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $84.80 million. It is not going to get to $100 million domestically, not without some help from the studio. That said, it has already made enough worldwide to cover its entire production budget and it will break even early in its home market run.
Despite earning incredible reviews, Tully only managed to open in sixth place with $3.28 million. Granted, it was only playing in 1,353 theaters, so it reached the Mendoza Line, but this is still disappointing.
Black Panther was right behind with $3.25 million over the weekend for a total of $693.24 million after 12 weeks of release. It will get to $700 million domestically, thanks in part to the boost it has gotten from Avengers: Infinity War.
Bad Samaritan barely managed tenth place with $1.76 million in 2,007 theaters. Its reviews are mixed and it only managed a B minus from CinemaScore. That said, its per theater average is so low that theater owners will drop it before word-of-mouth has any effect.
