Limited and VOD Releases: Now and Then

It is a slow week, both in terms of total releases and in terms of quality releases. The Gospel According to Andre and Summer 1993 are both earning great reviews, but will likely be relegated to the art house circuit. The film with the best chance of box office success is Who We Are Now, but even then it has an uphill battle.

Secondary VOD Releases:
A documentary about André Leon Talley, who began his career in fashion in the 1970s. The reviews are among the best of the weekend, but documentaries rarely have breakout success in theaters.
This film came out in Canada last week and bombed. This week it debuts in the States and I don’t think it will do much better. The film is set in the 1970s and deals with punk rock and aliens, including one played by Elle Fanning. This is the first of two limited releases coming out this week starring Elle Fanning. The film hits the home market on the 5th of June and will likely do better there than in theaters.

The second film starring Elle Fanning on this week’s list. This one has more buzz, but even weaker reviews. Maybe it is worth a rental on VOD, but that’s it.
A leftist man on the run from the police stumbles across a front for the FLA, Female Liberation Army. A couple of the women decide to hide him in the basement, which gets complicated quickly. The reviews are good, but not great, so it likely won’t find an audience until the home market.
We talked about this film previously, but there was a last-minute release date change. It is one of the best-reviewed releases on this week’s list, so that part hasn’t changed. Hopefully it can find an audience.
Julianne Nicholson plays a woman who has just got out of prison and is looking to get custody of her son back from her sister, with the help of an over enthusiastic public defender, Jess. There are not a ton of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but its Tomatometer Score is 91% and its average score is 8.2 out of 10. That’s a fantastic result and hopefully enough to do well at the box office.

Two of the four secondary VOD releases on this week’s list have no reviews. Of the other two, Feral is earning praise for the performances, but the script relies on too many clichés. Meanwhile, In Darkness’s Tomatometer Score is 75% positive, but the average score is barely more than 5 out of 10. Both are worth renting on VOD.
