Isle of Dogs

It’s a shallow week in terms of the total number of releases, but a lot of films on this list are worth picking up. Rampage is the biggest and it is worth buying, if you are into popcorn action flicks. There are a lot of other releases that are worth picking up, but not quite Pick of the Week contenders, like Disobedience, The Good Place: Season Two, etc. As for true Pick of the Week contenders, we have a limited selection and I’m going with Isle of Dogs on Blu-ray Combo Pack for that title.

Disobedience - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Rachel Weisz stars as Ronit, a woman who was forced to leave her orthodox Jewish family due to her unorthodox relationship with Esti. She returns later and their relationship reignites. The reviews are amazing, but there are no extras on the DVD / Blu-ray. It’s still worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Expanse: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is one of two Syfy shows canceled last season. This one was picked up by Amazon, so hopefully it will have a more successful run going forward. It’s worth picking up, but there are not a lot of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, so it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Good Place: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Kristen Bell stars as a recently deceased woman who finds herself in “The Good Place”. She’s not supposed to be there and if people find out, she’ll be sent to the bad place, so she has to learn to be a good person. At the end of the first season, a massive twist is revealed. ... She’s in the bad place and this is an experimental version of hell. The writing, acting, etc. are just stellar, while the show is not seen by enough people. It is definitely worth picking up, but there are not enough extras (1 audio commentary track, outtakes, and a short FX clip) to be a Pick of the Week contender.

I Feel Pretty - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pcak
Video on Demand
This movie is not as bad as its Tomatometer Score would indicate, but that’s not the same as saying it’s good. It’s just thoroughly average. If you like Amy Schumer’s sense of humor, then it is worth a rental.

Isle of Dogs - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The screener arrived on my desk on Monday. That’s not enough time to get a review done by the weekend. I’ll try to get it done this weekend. Also coming out this week is a Wes Anderson Double-Shot.

Rampage - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
One of the best movies based on a video game. It still only managed mixed reviews. It’s a fun movie and if you are a fan of popcorn action flicks, it is worth checking out. There are quite a lot of extras, including five featurettes, outtakes, and deleted scenes. Most of this is exclusive to the Blu-ray, so keep that in mind. If you are a fan of Dwayne Johnson, then it is worth picking up.

The Rolling Stones - From The Vault: No Security. San Jose '99 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Concert DVDs rarely sell well enough to make it on this list. Granted, it is a slow week, but the Rolling Stones would have a shot making it here even during a relatively busy week.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of the biggest indie hits of the 1990s. It launched the careers of its director and its star. Extras on this edition include a trio of new featurettes, as well as the old audio commentary track, interview featurette, and more. Its worth picking up and it is a contender for Pick of the Week.

Super Troopers 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is not as good as the original was, but it is close enough that if you bought the original you will want the sequel as well. You can also buy both of them on a DVD or Blu-ray.

A Quiet Place - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Just a quick note: The screener arrived, but not in time to get the review done by the weekend.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack Collector’s Edition
This is the first time I’ve reviewed this movie, which is a bit of a surprise. It has also been many years since I have seen the movie. Does it live up to my memories? Read our review to find out.

Truth or Dare - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film earned bad reviews but did well at the box office for a low-budget horror film. If you like this type of film, then maybe it is worth a rental, but that’s as enthusiastic as I can get.

The Tunnel: Vengeance: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A murder mystery about two cops, one British and the other French, who have to work together to solve crimes that take place in both countries. The show has earned amazing reviews and as long as you consider the show to be 6 TV movies instead of just six episodes, then it is worth picking up.

You Were Never Really Here - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film started out really well in limited release, but struggled as it expanded. It did earn $2.5 million in theaters, which is impressive for a limited release, but not as much as its opening weekend would suggest. Is it weaker than the reviews would indicate and that’s why it had short legs? Or is it just not mainstream enough? Read our review for my opinion.

Traffik - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Two Films By Hong Sangsoo - Reviews / Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a few secondary Blu-ray releases that caught my eye this week. Among these are the Two Films By Hong Sangsoo and The Housemaid.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Rampage - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
Amazon has a release for the 3D version of the film, but the image is just the pre-release poster. Weird.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
The Quick and the Dead - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Rampage - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Just two 4K releases this week, but one of them is the biggest release of the week.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Cooper Barret's Guide To Surviving Life - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Pitch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Second Chance - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Son of Zorn - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There are four complete series Megasets on this week’s list, sort of. All of these shows were canceled with no more than 13 episodes made. Pitch has the best reviews, but I’ve only seen Second Chance.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Across the River - No Reviews - Video on Demand
A.R.C.H.I.E. 2 - Reviews - Video on Demand
Kings - Reviews - Video on Demand
On Chesil Beach - Reviews - Video on Demand
Overboard - Reviews - Video on Demand
Tully - Reviews - Video on Demand
Overboard is the biggest secondary VOD release of the week, but it is not the best. Tully is the best.
