Home Market Releases for September 4th, 2018

September 4, 2018

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Like last week, this week is rather busy on the home market with many more TV on DVD releases. There are not a lot of big releases this week, nor are there a lot of contenders for Pick of the Week. It’s really a two-horse race between Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and New Game!!: Season Twp. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? on Blu-ray won that race rather easily.

Adrift - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This movie missed expectations, both with critics and at the box office. Its reviews are better than its ticket sales would indicate, so it is worth checking out. There are plenty of extras, which is a nice surprise, as many films that struggle at the box office don’t get many extras when they hit the home market. There are interviews, making of featurette, behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes, and an audio commentary track. Worth picking up for sure.

Adventure Time: The Final Seasons - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It is a bittersweet week for fans of Adventure Time. The final seasons are coming out on DVD this week, and while the show has been off its peak for a few seasons, it is still worth picking up.

Bull: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A courtroom drama that the critics thought wasn’t original enough to be worth watching, but it has found an audience on TV and the second season DVD is selling well.

The Cat o’ Nine Tails: Special Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is the second film in Argento’s Animal Trilogy and for a long time he considered it the weakest film in his career. The screener arrived late, but I got to the review this weekend. Is it as weak as Dario Argento’s opinion of the movie? Or has it aged into a classic? Or is it somewhere in-between? Read our review for my opinion.

Ghost Stories - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This horror anthology earned good reviews and started out well enough in limited release, but as soon as it tried to expand, it collapsed. It is selling really well at the box office, much better than its theatrical run. Extras include an audio commentary track, a featurette on the Rorschach test, and a before-and-after look at things cleaned up in post production. It is worth picking up, but not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Goldbergs: Season Five - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I missed the first two seasons of this show, but I got hooked in the third season and now it is one of only a handful of shows I watch week-by-week. The lack of extras hurt its quality, but it is still worth picking up.

Hawaii Five-O - The Complete Eighth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I quickly grew bored of this show and they got rid of the only characters I liked, so skip it.

Hereditary - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This movie was loved by critics and hated by audiences earning an F from CinemaScore. So who’s right? Both groups are. It is a very strange and very engaging film, but audiences opening night had no idea what they were getting themselves into and that’s a recipe for a low CinemaScore. It is worth checking out, but you have to go in knowing it will be a very strange movie. Despite doing rather well at the box office for a low-budget horror movie, its extras are limited to a featurette, deleted scenes, and an image gallery. Unless you’ve already seen the movie and love it, I would rent it first. It is just too bizarre for a blind buy.

Hocus Pocus: 25th Anniversary Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I am not a fan of this movie, but I know some people who swear it’s a classic. It comes with a Trivia and Treats edition of the movie, which looks like it will be fun for fans. Since the last Blu-ray had no extras, this could be enough for an upgrade.

Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains The Same: Anniversary Edition - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This concert Blu-ray is coming out on Friday and it is high definition audio only. It is not a concert film, but a concert CD on Blu-ray.

Love at First Bark - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It’s a Hallmark Channel Original Movie. ... Moving on.

NEW GAME!!: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The second season of this popular Anime. ... I assume it’s popular, otherwise it wouldn’t get a second season, as a lot of Anime titles only get one season. For those who don’t remember the first season, it is a show about Aoba Suzukaze, a high school graduate who gets her dream job as an artist at the video game studio that made her favorite game series and immediately begins designing characters, despite having absolutely no experience making 3D models. It’s Anime, not a documentary, so let’s just ignore how unlikely that is. I liked the first season enough to pre-order season two. If you want a workplace / slice of life comedy with a dash of Moe on the side, then this is worth picking up, even though there are no real extras on the two-disc set.

The Nightmare Before Christmas - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of my favorite movies of all time. However, it has been released on Blu-ray too many times to justify an upgrade. If you don’t have it yet, it is worth picking up.

Silicon Valley: Season Five - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The show is off its peak in terms of quality, but it is still good enough to be worth checking out.

Supernatural: The Complete Thirteenth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show is 13 years old. There are kids who started high school this week who are younger than this show is. I feel very, very old and I’m going to need to lie down for a nap.

...

Timeless: Season 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
There are only a handful of network TV shows I watch and this isn’t one of them. The reviews are good, but it has lost nearly two-thirds of its audience from the pilot to the second-season finale, which is a sharp decline. It is a high-concept show and these do tend to have short legs.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Apparently this movie will destroy anyone who grew up watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood with a combination of quality, genuine emotions, as well as nostalgia. I don’t think it will have that big of an effect on me, not because I’m cold-hearted, but because I’m Canadian and grew up on Mr. Dressup. (On a side note, Ernie Coombs, the actor who played Mr. Dressup, and Fred Rogers worked together early in their respective careers.) Even if you are like me and didn’t grow up on the show, it is worth picking up. If you did grow up on the show, it is the Pick of the Week. Just be prepared for a big, ugly cry.

Yes: Live At The Apollo - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is the second concert release on this week’s list. These releases almost never sell well enough to make it here. Yes is a great prog-rock band, one of my favorites, but I’m still a little surprised it is selling this well. It is worth checking out, if you are a fan of the band.

Young Sheldon: The Complete First Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I dislike The Big Bang Theory and I have no interest is the prequel / spin-off.

There is a wide selection of secondary Blu-ray releases, many of which are worth picking up. This includes limited releases (Beast); classic horrors (Deep Red); Anime (Glass Mask: The Complete Series).

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Found Footage 3D - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
We have a 3D release this week! Okay, it’s a “retro” 3D release, which means it uses the red and blue glasses (which are included) and doesn’t need a 3D TV. That’s actually kind of sad for 3D TVs.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Bad Boys Double-Shot - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Hereditary - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
There are only two 4K releases this week, including arguably the biggest release of the week, Hereditary. I’m not sure you need to see it in 4K, but it is an option.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Peter Gunn - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Sid Caesar: The Works - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
These are two old school TV Megasets. Peter Gunn was the first detective TV show featuring a character written specifically for TV, while Sid Caesar started his TV career practically the day TV was invented.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Darrow & Darrow: In the Key of Murder - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The Gospel According to Andre - Reviews - Video on Demand
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - Reviews - Video on Demand
Silencer - Reviews - Video on Demand
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is coming out on VOD this week. Considering how much I hated the previous film, I might not even bother getting a screener for this one.
