Fraggle Rock

This week, Solo: A Star Wars Story hits the home market and while the film missed expectations at the box office, it is still a big enough hit to scare away most of the competition. There are a number of releases on this week’s list that are worth picking up, like Pin Cushion, Welcome to the Dollhouse, as well as Solo itself. As for contenders for Pick of the Week, it is Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series on Blu-ray and nothing else.

911: The First Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A police procedural that started last year and earned good reviews, but not great reviews. Personally, I’m burned out on the genre.

Billions: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A TV show about a hedge-fund manager and the district attorney going after him. The reviews have improved and its ratings are solid, so if you liked the first two seasons, season three is worth picking up. That said, if you skipped the first two seasons, I can’t see the point of jumping into the show now.

Brave Witches: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
An Anime about witches fighting invading aliens, but the witches “brooms” are machines based on World War II fighter planes. It’s an ecchi action series that is a spin-off from Strike Witches. If you liked the first show and want more of the same, then it is worth picking up. However, “more of the same” is the key phrase here. Don’t go into the show expecting something new and fresh, although I have read reviews that suggest the fan service is toned down, while the show relies more on characters to keep audiences engaged. Sounds like an improvement to me.

C.B. Strike: The Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is less of a TV series and more of a trilogy of TV movies. The movies are great and getting three of them for $18 is a good deal.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Third Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show is considered by many to be the weakest in the Arrowverse. That said, fans of the DC shows on the CW should still enjoy it enough to pick up the Blu-ray. The extras aren’t great (a trio of featurettes and some outtakes) but they are enough for fans to want to buy it.

Dynasty 2017: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This remake TV series would have been canceled almost immediately given its ratings and reviews; however, it is huge internationally and the international sales means its performance here is immaterial to its overall financial success.

Fraggle Rock: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I love this show. I put in a request for a screener, but the chances of me getting one are very slim. It is not only a Pick of the Week contender, it will be an easy inclusion in our Holiday Gift Guide. The Blu-ray is loaded with extras, including the complete Animated Series, as well as a sing-along format and a lot more.

Also coming out this week is the Animated Series on DVD.

The Gifted: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A TV series set in the X-Men universe. It focuses on a family who has to go on the run from the government when they learn their two children have mutant powers. The first season’s reviews were good, but not great. That said, now that the world building is out of the way it could be a much better series going forward. Or the second season could be worse and it will be a show that you can safely ignore. Wait and see on this one, but I am cautiously optimistic.

Halloween - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This franchise has been around for 40 years and so far, only the first film has earned good reviews. That said, the upcoming installment is earning amazing reviews, so hopefully the curse is lifted. If you are excited about the new movie, and you’ve made the leap to 4K, then it is worth picking up.

Love on a Limb - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The first of two Hallmark Channel original movies on this week’s list. Like nearly all of them, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans of these movies know if they are in the target audience here.

MTS3K: The Lost & Found Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The people behind MST3K lost the rights to a couple of the movies they previously released, so they are taking the sets they were part of and combining the remaining six movies into one set. If you already have those movies, then there’s no point in getting the double-dip, but if you missed out the first time and don’t want to pay way too much money for an out of print DVD, then this is a great day for you.

One Piece: Collection 22 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. There’s a reason why it has lasted this long, but I just can’t imagine trying to catch up with the show at this point.

Pin Cushion - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Joanna Scanlan and Lily Newmark star as a mother and daughter who move to a new town hoping for a new life, but their attempts don’t work out very well. The film earned great reviews, but it went nowhere at the box office and it isn’t selling any better on the home market. That said, it is worth picking up.

Pumpkin Pie Wars - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
It’s a Hallmark Channel original movie. ... Moving on.

The Seagull - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Busted Oscar-bait. It’s a period piece based on a classic novel, which is catnip for Oscar voters. It’s not a bad movie, but with a Tomatometer Score of just 67%, it’s not going to pick up many nominations.

Solo: A Star Wars Story - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand
This is the first Star Wars film to lose money at the box office. There were extensive reshoots that cost as much as $100 million. Is the bloated production budget the cause of the box office problems? Or were the reshoots necessary to fix a broken movie? Read our review to find out.

Uncle Drew - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A movie that is based on a series of TV commercials. Its reviews were better than expected and it became a solid hit at the box office. Extras include an audio commentary track, making of / behind-the-scenes featurettes, outtakes, an animated short, and more. It’s worth picking up, especially if you are a fan of the cast.

Tokyo Ghoul: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Trip to Bountiful - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Welcome to the Dollhouse - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a number of great secondary Blu-ray releases this week... I think. There are so many Blu-rays on this week’s list that are marked as DVDs, or even an Audio CD in one case, while the image shows a Blu-ray case. I would report the mistakes to Amazon, but I’ve done that about a dozen times in the past and not once have I seen them fix a mistake. Welcome to the Dollhouse and A Raisin in the Sun are classics. I like The Principal and Quigley Down Under more than most critics, so I would recommend them. If you are into Anime, Bubblegum Crisis is an absolute classic back from the days where the only way to watch Anime was to spend $40 on a 40-minute VHS tape. You youngins have it so easy today. Princess Principal also looks like a fun ride.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Halloween - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The Punisher - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Punisher: War Zone - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Solo: A Star Wars Story - - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
X-Men Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Solo is the best 4K release on this week’s list. Granted, Halloween is stellar, but I can’t imagine you need to see it on 4K Ultra HD to enjoy it. Likewise, the X-Men Trilogy is good value, but not great value, because only one of the movies is truly great.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
Blondie - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Fraggle Rock - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Fraggle Rock: The Animated Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Power Rangers: Choujin Sentai Jetman - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Fraggle Rock theme song is going to be stuck in my head for weeks.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Leave No Trace - Reviews - Video on Demand
Skyscraper - target="_NewWindow">Reviews - Video on Demand
Leave No Trace is an excellent movie and I hope it earns some Awards Season glory. On the other hand, Skyscraper is a fun popcorn flick.
