Weekend Estimates: Halloween Holds on Strong, but Susparia Shines

October 28, 2018

Halloween

Halloween’s weekend estimates are matching our predictions perfectly with $32.05 million. If this number holds, it will have $126.70 million after just ten days of release. Internationally, it is estimated to earn $25.6 million in 62 markets for a two-week total of $45.6 million. It won’t match its domestic run internationally, but it doesn’t have to do be a financial success. In fact, since the film only cost $10 million to make, if it had just $45.6 million worldwide at this point, it would still have a chance of breaking even, eventually.

A Star is Born’s estimates are beating expectations with $14.15 million over the weekend for a running tally of $148.72 million. It could get to $200 million, if it does well during Awards Season and Warner Bros. gives it a push over the top. The film started out slower internationally, but it is having much better legs abroad. The film’s international haul this weekend is estimated at $17.6 million in 75 markets, helping it crack the century mark with $104.6 million. The film has 100% broken even, unless the studio spent an absolutely irresponsible amount of money on advertising, including its Oscar campaign.

Venom will come within a whisker of our prediction with $10.8 million over the weekend for a total of $187.3 million. Depending on how well it does on Halloween night, it could get to $200 million by this time next week, but I think it will likely take a few more days to hit that milestone. According to estimates, the film finally fell out of top spot internationally, but before you feel sorry for Sony, the film did earn $17.3 million over the weekend helping it crack $500 million worldwide. It could have earned half of that and still would have been fine compared to most predictions.

Weekend estimates have Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween in fourth place with $7.5 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $38.3 million. This is more than it cost to make. On the other hand, it is struggling somewhat internationally, earning just $10.3 million this weekend for a total of $24.2 million so far. It will still break even early in its home market run, so the studio should be happy with this result.

According to Lionsgate’s estimates, Hunter Killer came in a little weaker than expected at $6.65 million during its opening weekend. There is not a lot of positive things you can say about this result. Its reviews won’t help its word-of-mouth and even though it got an A minus from CinemaScore, it will likely have short legs, as theater owners won’t be looking to keep it around for long.

If the estimates hold, then Mid90s will have only managed 10th place during its semi-wide expansion with $3.0 million over the weekend. Its theater average will be just under $2,500, which is not enough to warrant further expansion.

Johnny English Strikes Again is only marginally better in that regard earning an estimated $1.63 million in 544 theaters for an average of $2,987. Its reviews are not going to help its legs. On the other hand, the film has nearly $100 million internationally, so its domestic numbers are immaterial.

It looks like Indivisible will be the latest faith-based film to miss the Mendoza Line, as estimates have it pulling in $1.58 million in 830 theaters. Its reviews improved from just 20% positive to 64% positive, but unfortunately, that theater average will result in a lot of theaters dropping the film as soon as they are contractually able to.

Suspiria’s weekend estimates have it breaking the record for highest theater average in 2018 earning nearly $180,000 in just two theaters for an average of $89,903. This bodes well for its wide expansion this coming Friday.
