Theater Averages: Silvers Wins Gold

April 25, 2019

Under The Silver Lake

Under the Silver Lake earned top spot on the theater average chart with an average of $17,635 in two theaters. This is amazing for two reasons. Firstly, its reviews are barely above the 50% level. Secondly, it opened on VOD on Tuesday, so anyone who was interested in seeing the movie didn’t have to wait long to see it at home instead. On the other hand, it is a A24 release and the company has had an amazing track record at the box office during its young career.

There were a lot of other new limited releases and some of them did very well. Red Joan came very close to the $10,000 Club with an average of $9,737 in four theaters. Hail Satan? also did well with an average of $8,832 in three theaters. Family was next with an average of $6,529 in three theaters. The Grizzlies opened with just over $50,000 in ten theaters for an average of $5,119. Kalank was the widest limited release of the week, and earned over $1 million in 320 theaters over the three-day weekend for an average of $3,989. That’s a great start for a film like this, especially for a Wednesday release.

On the other hand, we also had a chunk of films that struggled, starting with Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy Blache, which earned $3,237 in one theater. High on the Hog was close behind with an average of $3,025 in five theaters. Grass and Rafiki had very similar averages at $2,774 and $2,669 respectively.

Then we get to the films that missed the Mendoza Line and there were a handful of them. Despite its star power and its amazing reviews, Little Woods bombed with an average of $1,746 in 33 theaters. So much for its wide expansion on Friday. Fast Color also bombed with an average of $1,504 in 25 theaters. Hagazussa had the worst opening of the weekend with an average of just $549 in 11 theaters. On the other hand, it came out on Blu-ray on Tuesday, so its box office struggles are not a big deal.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Amazing Grace reached $1 million over the weekend and its theater count suggests it could expand a little bit more.
  • Kalank earned more than $1 million during its opening weekend, so obviously it reached that milestone in the process.
  • The Mustang just made it to $4 million over the weekend and has a real shot at $5 million.
  • It took more than a month since it got to $80 million, but Green Book reached $85 million domestically.
