Weekend estimates: The Little Things stays top on a sluggish weekend

February 7, 2021

The Little Things

Today’s Super Bowl might be causing some caution among the studios as they compile their weekend projections, but whichever way you cut it, we’re looking at another slow weekend in theaters. The Little Things will come out on top with around $2.1 million, according to Warner Bros.. That’s down a steep 56% from its opening weekend, and 9% below our model’s prediction. In general, almost all films are falling a little shy of the model’s numbers, suggesting that we’re still not seeing real growth in the market.

One piece of good news is that the film I’ve been tracking as the market’s bellweather, The Croods: A New Age, will be down only 3% this weekend, and beat its prediction by 8%. That compares to beating the model by 12% last weekend, and by 25% the weekend before. It has now earned over $46 million, and if it keeps picking up $2 million each week for five or six more weeks it will overtake Tenet to become the top-grossing release during the pandemic. That’s looking quite likely at the moment, although the release of Tom and Jerry on February 26 will finally give it some competition among family audiences.

International Markets

The Little Things will be the top studio film reporting international figures this weekend with $2.1 million from 22 international territories. Its Russian weekend will come in at $755,000 from 810 screens for $2.2 million to date. Overall, it will earn $3.5 million globally this weekend for a modest cume of $13 million. Its performance isn’t helped by the closure of movie theaters in Saudi Arabia this weekend to counter a spike in COVID cases. That was its strongest territory last weekend. It has yet to open in most major markets.

Wonder Woman 1984 is nearing the end of its run, and will add $653,000 internationally this weekend for a total of $114.2 million outside North America so far, and $154.5 million worldwide.

The Croods: A New Age will pick up $808,000 internationally this weekend for a total of $101.666 million overseas. Its global total is now $147.686 million, with its two top markets Australia, with $286,000 this weekend for a total of $15.556 million; and China with $163,000 for $53.696 million in total.
