Black Widow

After two weeks on top of both the box office charts and the theater count list, F9: The Fast Saga will take a back seat to the long-awaited arrival of Black Widow. The film from Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios will debut in 4,160 theaters and will also be available to order on Disney+ with Premier Access. That theater count is a shade lower than the 4,179 theaters F9 opened in over the June 25 weekend, but still the second best of the pandemic era.

Black Widow rolled out in 11 international markets on Wednesday, where is earned an estimated $4.9 million.

After scoring a domestic total to date of $128 million and over $500 million worldwide, F9 enters its third weekend at the North American box office with a drop from 4,203 locations last week down to 3,649 this time around; that’s enough of a drop to settle in at third place behind one of the other two Universal Pictures features. The Boss Baby: Family Business adds 44 locations this week, and now stands at 3,688. Rounding out the top five this week are The Forever Purge and A Quiet Place: Part II at 3,058 and 2,359 locations respectively…

Opening in limited release this week is the nature documentary The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 from Bleecker Street. The film, which is directed by Joshua Zeman and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, investigates the “52 Hertz Whale” and opens in 75 locations before being available on video-on-demand on July 16th. Also opening in limited release this week is Summertime, from Good Deed Entertainment. The film follows the intersecting stories of 27 young spoken-word poets over a single day in Los Angeles, and premiers at The Landmark Theater in Los Angeles and the Quad Cinema in New York before expanding to over 25 markets beginning July 16th.

Looking ahead to next week, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain all open in wide release, with the latter debuting in an estimated 800 locations.
