Jungle Cruise

Walt Disney’s release of Jungle Cruise breaks a pandemic-era record for widest release, arriving in 4,310 theaters this weekend. The number matches that of another Disney feature, Onward, which debuted just before theaters began shutting down back in March, 2020. The new film, which is based on the popular theme park attraction, follows Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as Amazon riverboat captain Frank Wolff and Dr. Lily Houghton as they encounter innumerable dangers while they travel through the Amazon rain forest. Jungle Cruise will be available to stream simultaneously on the Disney+ platform.

Also new this week A24’s The Green Knight. The epic fantasy adventure based on the Arthurian legend is estimated to open in 2,700 theaters, and is on a 20-day theatrical window before becoming available via premium-on-demand. Lastly, the highly touted Cannes Festival feature, Stillwater, starring Matt Damon, debuts this weekend in 2,531 theaters. Previews for both The Green Knight and Stillwater begin at 7pm EST today.

Rounding out the top five this week is Snake Eyes in 3,540 theaters; last week’s box office leader Old, which adds 24 theaters this week, bringing the count to 3,379 locations; and Black Widow (last weeks widest release), drops 890 theaters this week, landing at 3,360 locations.

Looking ahead to next week we see the release of Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad, starring an all-star ensemble cast, including Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Idris Elba.

Note: A24 and Warner Bros. counts are estimates.
