Theater counts: Spider-Man swings into a stellar 4,336 theaters

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters in a big way this weekend, landing in a stellar 4,336 locations. That count places it as the second-widest release of the year, behind No Time to Die’s 4,407 and in front of Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s 4,315. This latest Spider-Man feature again pairs director Jon Watts and Tom Holland (as Spider-Man) from 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home; a film that went on to score over $1 billion worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home carries a $200m budget, eclipsing its predecessor by $40m. Also making its theatrical debut this week is Nightmare Alley. The neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Guillermo del Toro is set to release in 2,145 locations. The film, which is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham contains a bevy of top Hollywood actors.
New in limited release this week is The Novice starring Isabelle Fuhrman. The psychological thriller follows a queer freshman who joins her university’s rowing team and undertakes an obsessive physical and psychological journey to make it to the top varsity boat, no matter the cost. The Novice is set to open in 37 locations. Lastly, Amazon Studios releases The Tender Bar in LA and NY on Friday before expanding nationwide on Wednesday. The film will bow globally on Prime Video beginning January 7, 2022.
Leading up to the Christmas holiday we see a handful of mid-week releases as Sing 2, The Matrix Resurrections and The King’s Man arrive on Wednesday. Universal Pictures is releasing the sequel to the 2016 animated Sing; a film which took in over $600 million worldwide five years ago. The latest installment will arrive in 3,892 theaters. The Matrix Resurrections is the sequel to 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions which took in $427 million worldwide. The latest in the franchise, which is directed by Lana Wachowski and stars Keanu Reeves as Neo will open in 3,552 theaters. Lastly, The King’s Man is another film with a star-studded ensemble cast, including Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton. The film looks to launch in 3,125 locations.
