Theater counts: Minecraft stacks on more theaters to remain widest release

A Minecraft Movie

There’s a new leader in town, and it goes by the name of Minecraft. A Minecraft Movie blew away nearly all expectations in its opening weekend, scoring just short of $163 million from its start in 4,263 theaters, and becoming the largest domestic opening weekend since last July when Deadpool & Wolverine debuted with $211 million. While a plethora of newcomers make their way to the big screen this weekend, none will pose a serious threat to topple the reigning champ.

The largest of the new films arriving in cinemas this weekend is The Amateur starring Rami Malek, beginning its run in 3,400 locations, including IMAX screens. The film follows a brilliant but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley, whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. The film is directed by James Hawes, who is making his second foray into directing after helming the 2023 biographical drama, One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is the tech thriller, Drop. The movie follows a widowed mother who is terrorized by a series of anonymous messages to her phone. The film is referenced to the AirDrop feature on the iPhone, which allows people to share photos and videos with other phones within a certain proximity. The film starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar will be available in 3,085 theaters throughout North America.

Making its way into 2,670 movie houses this weekend is Warfare. The film follows a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overseeing the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. The action film will also be available to view on large format and in participating IMAX locations.

Arriving in approximately 3,200 locations this weekend is the latest from Angel Studios with the faith-based animated film, The King of Kings. As a father tells his son the greatest story ever told, the child, through vivid imagination, walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice.

Worth noting is tomorrow’s release of the third installment of The Chosen: Last Supper trilogy with the opening of The Chosen: Last Supper — Part 3. While no theater count has been reported, the first two chapters debuted in 2,234 and 2,313 theaters, respectively, so we look for a similar count for the latest film.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we once again see the release of four new wide releases, ready to challenge the current lineup of films at the box office. These include The Wedding Banquet, Sneaks and COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, and lastly, Sinners, with the latter expected to arrive in approximately 3,400 locations.
