Birdman debuted in first place on the Per Theater Chart with an amazing average of $106,099. This is the best per theater average since The Grand Budapest Hotel opened with just over $200,000 for its per theater average. It wasn't the only film in the $10,000 club, as Dear White People opened with an average of $31,633 in eleven theaters. The Tale of Princess Kaguya was surprisingly strong during its opening weekend earning an average of $18,305 in three theaters. God the Father earned $15,037 in one theater. The final film in the $10,000 club was Listen Up Philip, which earned an average of $11,642 in two theaters. Diplomacy might have made it in the $10,000 club if it opened on Friday. However, it opened on Wednesday earning $8,518 in one theater over the weekend for a total opening of $12,750.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases was Guardian Angel, which we just got the numbers for. (They literally showed up while I was working on this story.) The film opened well with an average of $6,312 in two theaters. A Matter of Faith was one of the wider limited releases of the week earning an average of $5,547 in 25 theaters. The re-release of Hiroshima Mon Amour earned an average of $3,699 in five theaters. The Hacker Wars really struggled with an opening weekend of $2,958 in one theater. Rudderless just avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,080 in 18 theaters. Watchers of the Sky wasn't as lucky earning an average of $1,868 in four theaters. Camp X-Ray only managed $1,316 in one theater, while Algorithms earned just $317, also in one theater.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Song just managed to get to $1 million over the weekend and it will get no further.
  • Kill the Messenger reached $1 million before the weekend and nearly hit $2 million over the weekend.
  • The Good Lie lost more than half of its theater count this weekend, bit still managed to get to $2 million. That's as far as it will go, on the other hand.
  • My Old Lady hit $3 million over the weekend. It might get to $4 million, but that's not a sure thing.
  • Meet the Mormons saw its weekend haul fall by 77%, but it still got to $3 million before the weekend and $4 million over the weekend. It may or may not get to $5 million before it leaves theaters.
