Theater counts: Wish holds off a cluster of newcomers to remain widest release

November 30, 2023

Wish

The long holiday weekend saw three films vying for number one at the box office, with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes taking the prize over both the three- and five-day weekend, relegating new arrivals, Napoleon, and Wish to their second and third place spots respectively. This week brings about five new wide releases including Beyoncé’s own concert film with the release of RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ More...

November 26, 2023

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes will pull off a surprise second win at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend, besting Disney’s latest animated feature and the historical grandeur of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon to pull off the win. Songbirds will make $28.82 million this weekend, according to Lionsgate’s Sunday-morning prediction. That’s a drop of 35% from its opening weekend. More...

Weekend projections: Songbirds & Snakes headed for respectable mid-40s on debut

November 19, 2023

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is headed for a very respectable $44-million debut, according to Lionsgate’s Sunday-morning projection. While substantially less than the amount earned by the other films in the franchise, all of which started out with over $100 million, it’s right in line with our Friday-morning prediction, and sets the movie up for a good run, at least over the coming Thanksgiving week. With another $54.5 million projected internationally, we’re looking at a worldwide opening just shy of $100 million. More...

Weekend predictions: Songbirds & Snakes looking for mid-40s weekend

November 17, 2023

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes will land with an opening weekend somewhere in the mid-$40-millions, according to our model’s Friday run. While that’s well short of the debuts of previous films in the franchise, it’s a respectable number, and it’ll look very respectable if the final number comes in ahead of the $46.1 million earned by The Marvels last weekend. Technically, there’s a lot of competition from new releases this weekend, but those films neatly manage to avoid competing with one another, so in reality this could be a weekend when four new movies thrive. Theater counts: The Marvels holds on as widest release despite a flurry of newcomers

November 16, 2023

The Marvels

After a much lower than expected start for The Marvels last weekend, the latest Marvel film will remain the widest release this week, while four new wide releases make their way into theaters in time for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Marvels will hold steady in 4,030 locations this week after collecting just over $46 million during its first three days. While an impressive haul by most standards, it posted the lowest earning opening weekend for an MCU film to date. More...

Weekend projections: The Marvels crashing to worst MCU opening

November 12, 2023

The Marvels

There’s simply no way to sugarcoat this one. The Marvels is having a disastrous opening weekend, limping to a projected $47 million as of Sunday morning. That’s the worst opening weekend for any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, behind The Incredible Hulk’s $55.4 million back in 2008. International numbers are looking a little better, with $63.3 million projected from 51 territories, but that points to a likely global total of $300 million to $400 million—in the vicinity of the pandemic-ravaged Eternals and Black Widow. Weekend predictions: The Marvels will struggle to get to $50 million

November 10, 2023

The Marvels

Things don’t look good for The Marvels going into this weekend. After lukewarm (and sometimes hostile) buzz leading up to the release of the film, ticket pre-sales have been disappointing, and its Thursday preview numbers were a downright awful $6.6 million. That’s the worst preview number for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since Ant-Man back in 2015. That film went on to earn $57.2 million over its opening weekend. With sequels tending to be more front-loaded, it looks like The Marvels will struggle to reach $50 million this weekend. More...

Theater counts: The Marvels launches in 4,030 theaters

November 9, 2023

The Marvels

After a rather lackluster week at the box office, this weekend should see a definite uptick, brought on largely by the release of The Marvels. Three other wide releases also make their cinematic debuts, including It’s a Wonderful Knife, Journey to Bethlehem, and Saturday’s release of Bollywood action feature, Tiger 3. More...

Weekend projections: Priscilla, Taylor Swift, and Radical make up for sharp fall for Freddy’s

November 5, 2023

Priscilla

We’re headed for a slow weekend at the box office, thanks mostly to a lack of major new releases, but also because Five Nights at Freddy’s is suffering a steep post-Halloween slump. Several films are stepping up and taking advantage of their opportunity to lure in audiences not distracted by a blockbuster title. Priscilla is outperforming expectations on its wide expansion; Radical has come from almost literally nowhere to land in the top five; and TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR is enjoying a strong hold in its fourth weekend in theaters.
