Theater Counts: Power Rangers Unleash in 3,693 Theaters
March 23, 2017
The consensus is that nothing can topple Beauty and the Beast from the top of the box office chart this weekend, but Lionsgate are at least going to give it a shot. The studio announced that Power Rangers (or Saban’s Power Rangers, as they’ve taken to calling it) will debut in a mighty 3,693 theaters this weekend. With B’n’B holding in 4,210 theaters, it will still have a distinct advantage, and it would take something truly special for Power Rangers to pull off a win.
A couple of other films are opening wide, but they have even less chance of hitting the higher echelons of the chart. Life is the biggest wildcard, as it opens in 3,146 theaters after a strong marketing campaign. Chips looks dead on arrival, and will only play in 2,464 locations.
Wilson also opens this weekend, and will be playing in 310 theaters.
Looking ahead to next weekend, The Boss Baby is making an all-out bid for box office gold, with a launch in 3,700 theaters. Ghost in the Shell will launch in a more subdued 3,200 venues… enough to be potent, but perhaps a sign that it’s headed for a middle-tier performance.
